Righteous are you, O LORD, when I plead with you: yet let me talk with you of your judgments: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? why are all they happy that deal very treacherously?
You have planted them, yes, they have taken root: they grow, yes, they bring forth fruit: you are near in their mouth, and far from their inmost thoughts.
But you, O LORD,knowme: you have seenme, and triedmy hearttoward you: pull them outlike sheepfor the slaughter, and preparethem for the dayof slaughter.
How long shall the landmourn, and the herbsof every fieldwither, for the wickednessof them that dwelltherein? the beastsare consumed, and the birds;because they said,He shall not seeour last end.
God’s Answer to Jeremiah
If you have runwith the footmen, and they have weariedyou, then how can you contendwith horses?andifin the landof peace,in whichyou trusted, they wearied you, then how will you doin the swellingof Jordan?
For even your brothers, and the houseof your father, even they have dealt treacherouslywith you; yes, they have calleda multitudeafteryou: believethem not, though they speakfair wordsto you.
I have forsakenmy house,I have leftmy heritage;I have giventhe dearly belovedof my soulinto the handof her enemies.
My heritageis to me as a lionin the forest;it cries outagainst me: therefore have I hatedit.
My heritageisto measa speckledbird, the birdsround aboutareagainst her; comeyou, assembleall the beastsof the field, cometo devour.
Manypastorshave destroyedmy vineyard, they have troddenmy portionunder foot, they have mademy pleasantportiona desolatewilderness.
They have madeit desolate, and beingdesolateit mournsto me; the whole landis made desolate, because no manlaysitto heart.
The spoilershave comeupon all high placesthrough the wilderness:for the swordof the LORDshall devourfrom theoneendof the landeven to theotherendof the land:no fleshshall have peace.
They have sownwheat, but shall reapthorns:they have put themselves to pain, butshall not profit:and they shall be ashamedof your revenuesbecause of the fierceangerof the LORD.
A Message for Israel’s Neighbors
Thus saysthe LORDagainst all my evilneighbors, that touchthe inheritancewhich I have caused my peopleIsraelto inherit;Look, I will pluck them outof their land, and pluck outthe houseof Judahfrom amongthem.
And it shall happen, afterthat I have plucked them outI will return, and have compassionon them, and will bring them again, every manto his heritage, and every manto his land.
And it shall happen, if they will diligentlylearnthe waysof my people,to swearby my name,The LORDlives;as they taughtmy peopleto swearby Baal;then shall they be builtin the midstof my people.
But if they will not obey,I will utterlypluck upand destroythat nation, saysthe LORD.
