Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.
And Nahashthe Ammoniteansweredthem, On thiscondition will I makea covenant with you, that I may thrust outall your righteyes,and layit for a reproachupon all Israel.
And the elders of Jabesh said to him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers to all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to you.
Then camethe messengersto Gibeahof Saul,and toldthe tidingsin the earsof the people:and all the peoplelifted uptheir voices,and wept.
And indeed, Saulcameafterthe herdout of the field;and Saulsaid,What ails the peoplethat they weep?And they toldhim the tidingsof the menof Jabesh.
And the Spiritof Godcameupon Saulwhen he heardthose tidings,and his angerwas kindledgreatly.
And he tooka yokeof oxen,and hewed them in pieces,and sentthem throughout all the coastsof Israelby the handsof messengers,saying,Whoever comes not forthafterSauland afterSamuel,so shall it be doneto his oxen.And the fearof the LORDfellon the people,and they came outwith oneconsent.
And when he numberedthem in Bezek,the childrenof Israelwere threehundredthousand,and the menof Judahthirtythousand.
And they said to the messengers that came, Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, Tomorrow, by that time the sun be hot, you shall have help. And the messengers came and showed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
Therefore the menof Jabeshsaid,Tomorrowwe will come outto you, and you shall dowith us all that seemsgoodto you.
And it was so on the next day,that Saulputthe peoplein threecompanies;and they cameinto the midstof the hostin the morningwatch,and slewthe Ammonitesuntil the heatof the day:and it happened, that they which remainedwere scattered,so that twoof them were not lefttogether.

And the peoplesaidto Samuel,Who is he that said,Shall Saulreignover us? bringthe men,that we may put them to death.
And Saulsaid,There shall not a manbe put to deaththis day:for todaythe LORDhas workedsalvationin Israel.
Then saidSamuelto the people,Come,and let us goto Gilgal,and renewthe kingdomthere.
And all the peoplewentto Gilgal;and there they made Saulkingbeforethe LORDin Gilgal;and there they sacrificedsacrificesof peace offeringsbeforethe LORD;and there Sauland all the menof Israelrejoicedgreatly.
