Zephaniah Prophesies Judgment on Judah

The word of the LORD which came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

I will surely gather all from off the face of the ground — the utterance of the LORD.

I will gather man and beast; I will gather the bird of the heavens and the fish of the sea, and the stumbling blocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the face of the ground — the utterance of the LORD.

And I will stretch out my hand over Judah and over all those dwelling in Jerusalem; and I will cut off from this place the remnant of the Baal, the name of the idol-priests with the priests,

and those bowing down on the roofs to the host of the heavens, and those bowing down who swear to the LORD and who swear by Milcom,

and those turning back from following the LORD, and those who have not sought the LORD and have not searched for him.

The Day of the LORD

Hush before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is near; for the LORD has prepared a sacrifice, he has consecrated his invited ones.

And it will be, on the day of the sacrifice of the LORD, that I will attend to the officials and the sons of the king and all those clothed in foreign clothing.

And I will attend to everyone who leaps over the threshold on that day — those filling the house of their masters with violence and deceit.

And it will be, on that day — the utterance of the LORD — a voice of outcry from the Fish Gate, and a wailing from the Second Quarter, and a great breaking from the hills.

Wail, those dwelling in the Mortar, for all the people of Canaan are destroyed; all those laden with silver are cut off.

And it will be, at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps; and I will attend to the men who are congealed on their dregs, who say in their heart, The LORD will not do good and he will not do evil.

And their wealth will become plunder and their houses a desolation; and they will build houses and not dwell in them, and they will plant vineyards and not drink their wine.

The great day of the LORD is near — near and hurrying greatly. The sound of the day of the LORD is bitter; there the mighty man raises a war cry.

That day is a day of fury, a day of distress and anguish, a day of waste and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of cloud and thick darkness,

a day of horn and shout against the fortified cities and against the high corners.

And I will bring distress on man, and they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD; and their blood will be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung.

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them on the day of the fury of the LORD; and in the fire of his jealousy all the earth will be devoured — for he will make a full end, indeed a terrifying one, of all those dwelling in the earth.
