Song of Solomon5

The Bride and Her Beloved

The Bridegroom

The Friends

I have come to my garden, my sister, bride; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice, I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey, I have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, friends; drink and be drunk with loves!

The Bride

I was asleep, but my heart was awake. The voice of my beloved, knocking: “Open to me, my sister, my darling, my dove, my perfect one — for my head is filled with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.”

I have taken off my tunic; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I soil them?

My beloved put his hand through the opening, and my insides stirred for him.

I rose, I myself, to open to my beloved, and my hands dripped myrrh, and my fingers flowing myrrh, upon the handles of the bolt.

I opened, I myself, to my beloved — and my beloved had slipped away, had passed on. My soul went out when he spoke. I sought him and did not find him; I called him and he did not answer me.

The watchmen who go about in the city found me; they struck me, they wounded me. They lifted my shawl from upon me, the keepers of the walls.

I adjure you, daughters of Jerusalem: if you find my beloved — what shall you tell him? That I am sick with love.

The Friends

What is your beloved more than a beloved, most beautiful among women? What is your beloved more than a beloved, that you so adjure us?

The Bride

My beloved is dazzling and ruddy, bannered above ten thousand.

His head is gold, pure gold; his locks are wavy, black as a raven.

His eyes are like doves beside channels of water, bathing in milk, sitting by a full pool.

His cheeks are like a bed of spice, towers of perfume. His lips are lilies, dripping flowing myrrh.

His hands are rods of gold set with beryl. His belly is a slab of ivory overlaid with sapphires.

His legs are pillars of marble founded on sockets of pure gold. His appearance is like Lebanon, choice as the cedars.

His palate is sweetness, and all of him is desirable. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, daughters of Jerusalem.
