Boaz Redeems Ruth

Now Boaz had gone up to the gate and sat down there — and look, the redeemer of whom Boaz had spoken was passing by. And he said, “Turn aside; sit down here, So-and-so.” And he turned aside and sat down.

And he took ten men from the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” And they sat down.

And he said to the redeemer: “The portion of the field that belonged to our brother Elimelech — Naomi, who has returned from the field of Moab, is selling it.

And I said I would uncover your ear, saying: Buy it, in front of those sitting here and in front of the elders of my people. If you will redeem, redeem. But if he will not redeem, tell me, so that I may know — for there is no one besides you to redeem, and I am after you.” And he said, “I will redeem.”

And Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the wife of the dead man, to raise up the name of the dead over his inheritance.”

And the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. Redeem for yourself my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem.”

Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redemption and concerning exchange, to confirm any matter: a man drew off his sandal and gave it to his neighbor. And this was the attestation in Israel.

And the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he drew off his sandal.

And Boaz said to the elders and to all the people: “You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that belonged to Elimelech, and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon, from the hand of Naomi.

And also Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to raise up the name of the dead over his inheritance, so that the name of the dead is not cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his place. You are witnesses this day.”

And all the people who were at the gate, and the elders, said: “Witnesses! May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your house like Rachel and like Leah, who between them built the house of Israel. And may you do worthily in Ephrathah, and proclaim a name in Bethlehem.

And may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah — from the seed that the LORD will give you from this young woman.”

Boaz Marries Ruth

And Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her; and the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son.

And the women said to Naomi: “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you without a redeemer this day. And may his name be proclaimed in Israel.

And he shall be to you a restorer of soul, and a sustainer of your old age — for your daughter-in-law who loves you has borne him, she who is better to you than seven sons.”

And Naomi took the child and set him on her lap, and she became his nurse.

And the women, her neighbors, gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi”; and they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

The Line of David

And these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron,

and Hezron fathered Ram, and Ram fathered Amminadab,

and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmah,

and Salmon fathered Boaz, and Boaz fathered Obed,

and Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.
