By the Rivers of Babylon
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat and also wept, when we remembered Zion.
On the poplars in her midst we hung our lyres.
For there our captors asked us for words of song, and our tormentors for gladness: “Sing to us from a song of Zion.”
How can we sing the song of the LORD on foreign ground?
If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand forget.
Let my tongue cling to my palate if I do not remember you, if I do not lift Jerusalem above the head of my gladness.
Remember, LORD, for the sons of Edom the day of Jerusalem — those who said, “Strip her! Strip her! To the foundation in her!”
Daughter of Babylon, you devastated one — happy is the one who repays you your recompense that you dealt to us.
Happy is the one who seizes and dashes your little ones against the rock.
