The Words of Agur

The words of Agur son of Jakeh, the oracle. The utterance of the man to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:

For I am more brutish than a man, and I do not have the understanding of a human.

And I have not learned wisdom, that I should know the knowledge of the Holy One.

Who has gone up to the heavens and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has raised up all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son, if you know?

Every saying of God is refined; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

Two things I have asked of you; do not withhold them from me before I die:

Emptiness and a word of lying put far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me the bread of my portion,

lest I be filled and deny, and say, “Who is the LORD?” — and lest I be dispossessed and steal, and seize the name of my God.

Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you and you be found guilty.

There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother.

There is a generation pure in its own eyes, and not washed from its filth.

There is a generation — how haughty are its eyes, and its eyelids are lifted up!

There is a generation whose teeth are swords and whose jaws are knives, to devour the afflicted from the earth and the needy from among men.

The leech has two daughters: “Give! Give!” Three are these that are not satisfied; four do not say, “Enough”:

Sheol, and a barren womb; a land not satisfied with water, and fire that does not say, “Enough.”

An eye that mocks a father and despises obedience to a mother — the ravens of the valley will pick it out, and the sons of the eagle will eat it.

Three are these that are too wonderful for me, and four that I do not know:

the way of an eagle in the heavens, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship in the heart of the sea, and the way of a man with a young woman.

So is the way of an adulterous woman: she eats and wipes her mouth and says, “I have done no iniquity.”

Under three the earth quakes, and under four it cannot bear up:

under a servant when he becomes king, and a senseless fool when he is filled with bread;

under a hated woman when she is married, and a maidservant when she dispossesses her mistress.

Four are these, the small of the earth, and they are wise, made wise:

the ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their bread in the summer;

the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they set their house in the rock;

the locusts have no king, yet all of them go out in ranks;

the lizard you can seize with the hands, yet it is in the palaces of a king.

Three are these that do well in their stride, and four that do well in walking:

the lion, mighty among the animals, which does not turn back from anything;

the strutting rooster, or the he-goat, and a king whose army is with him.

If you have been foolish in lifting yourself up, or if you have schemed — hand to mouth!

For pressing milk brings out curds, and pressing the nose brings out blood, and pressing anger brings out a quarrel.
