Philippians1

Greetings from Paul and Timothy

Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the overseers and ministers:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving and Prayer

I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

always in every supplication of mine for you all, making the supplication with joy

for your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,

being persuaded of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus;

just as it is right for me to think this about you all, since I have you in my heart, both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all being fellow partners with me in grace.

For God is my witness how I long after you all in the heart of Christ Jesus.

And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all discernment,

for you to approve the things that are excellent, so that you may be pure and blameless unto the day of Christ,

filled with the fruit of righteousness that is through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Paul’s Trials Advance the Gospel

Now I want you to know, brothers, that the things concerning me have turned out rather unto the advancement of the gospel,

so that my chains have become clearly known in Christ in the whole praetorium and to all the rest,

and most of the brothers in the Lord, trusting because of my chains, are much more abundantly daring to speak the word fearlessly.

Some indeed proclaim Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from goodwill.

The ones from selfish ambition proclaim Christ, not purely, supposing to raise up affliction for my chains;

but the ones from love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel.

What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretext or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,

for I know that this will turn out for me unto deliverance through your supplication and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I will be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether through life or through death.

To Live Is Christ

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

But if I am to live in the flesh, this for me is the fruit of labor; and what I will choose I do not know.

I am pressed between the two, having the desire to depart and to be with Christ, for that is much better;

but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.

And being persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of the faith,

so that your boasting may abound in Christ Jesus in me, through my coming to you again.

Worthy of the Gospel

Only conduct yourselves as citizens worthily of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear the things concerning you — that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one soul striving together for the faith of the gospel,

and not being frightened in anything by those opposing you, which is to them a demonstration of destruction, but of your salvation, and this from God;

because to you it has been granted, concerning Christ, not only to believe in him but also to suffer for him,

having the same conflict such as you saw in me and now hear to be in me.
