Laws about Vows
And Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the sons of Israel, saying, “This is the word that the LORD has commanded:
When a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind a bond on his soul, he shall not break his word; according to all that comes out of his mouth he shall do.
And when a woman vows a vow to the LORD, and binds a bond, in her father’s house, in her youth,
and her father hears her vow and her bond that she has bound on her soul, and her father keeps silent toward her — then all her vows shall stand, and every bond that she has bound on her soul shall stand.
But if her father forbids her on the day he hears, none of her vows or her bonds that she has bound on her soul shall stand; and the LORD will forgive her, because her father forbade her.
And if she belongs to a husband, with her vows on her, or a rash utterance of her lips by which she has bound her soul,
and her husband hears it, and on the day he hears he keeps silent toward her — then her vows shall stand, and her bonds that she has bound on her soul shall stand.
But if on the day her husband hears he forbids her, then he annuls her vow that is on her, and the rash utterance of her lips by which she bound her soul; and the LORD will forgive her.
But the vow of a widow or a divorced woman — all that she has bound on her soul — shall stand against her.
And if she vowed in her husband’s house, or bound a bond on her soul with an oath,
and her husband heard and kept silent toward her, and did not forbid her — then all her vows shall stand, and every bond that she bound on her soul shall stand.
But if her husband surely annuls them on the day he hears, then whatever came out of her lips — her vows, or the bond of her soul — shall not stand. Her husband has annulled them, and the LORD will forgive her.
Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul — her husband may make it stand, and her husband may annul it.
But if her husband keeps altogether silent toward her from day to day, then he makes all her vows stand, or all her bonds that are on her; he has made them stand, because he kept silent toward her on the day he heard.
But if he surely annuls them after he has heard, then he shall bear her iniquity.”
These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between a father and his daughter in her youth, in her father’s house.
