Matthew27

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

And when morning had arrived, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.

And having bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor.

Judas Hangs Himself

Then Judas, the one who was betraying Him, having seen that He was condemned, having regretted it, turned back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

saying, “I sinned, having betrayed innocent blood.” Then they said, “What is that to us? You yourself will see.”

And having cast down the pieces of silver into the temple, he withdrew; and having gone away, he hanged himself.

And the chief priests, having taken the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.”

And having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for a burial place for the strangers.

Therefore that field was called Field of Blood until this day.

Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying: “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the One priced, whom they set a price on by the sons of Israel,

and they gave them for the field of the potter, as the Lord directed me.”

Jesus before Pilate

And Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You Yourself the King of the Jews?” And Jesus was saying, “You yourself say.”

And in the accusing of Him by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.

Then Pilate says to Him, “Do you not hear how many things they witness against you?”

And He did not answer him to even one word, so as to amaze the governor exceedingly.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

Now at the feast the governor had been accustomed to release one prisoner to the multitude, whom they were wishing.

And they were holding at that time a notable prisoner being named Jesus Barabbas.

When therefore they were assembled, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want that I may release to you — Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is named Christ?”

For he knew that through envy they delivered Him up.

And when he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Let there be nothing between you and that righteous man; for many things I suffered today in a dream because of Him.”

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they may ask for Barabbas and may destroy Jesus.

And the governor, answering, said to them, “Which of the two do you desire I may release to you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”

Pilate says to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all say, “Let him be crucified.”

And he was saying, “For what evil did He commit?” But they were crying out excessively, saying, “Let him be crucified.”

Pilate Washes His Hands

And Pilate, having seen that it availed nothing but rather a riot is arising, having taken water, washed the hands opposite the crowd, saying, “I am guiltless of this blood; you yourselves will see to it.”

And all the people, answering, said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”

Then he released Barabbas to them; and having flogged Jesus, he delivered Him up that He may be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

Then the soldiers of the governor, having taken Jesus with them to the Praetorium, gathered before Him all the cohort;

and having stripped Him, they put around Him a scarlet robe;

and having twisted together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and having bowed the knees before Him, they mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

And having spit upon Him, they took the reed and were striking Him on His head.

And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him and put on Him His garments, and led Him away to crucify Him.

The Crucifixion

And going forth, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon; him they compelled that he may carry His cross.

And having come to a place being named Golgotha, which is being named Place of a Skull,

they gave Him wine mingled with gall to drink; and having tasted it, He did not wish to drink it.

And having crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots;

and sitting down, they were guarding Him there.

And they put up over His head His accusation written: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”

At the same time two robbers are crucified with Him, one at the right hand and one at the left.

And those passing by were denigrating Him, wagging their heads

and saying, “You who are destroying the temple and building it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, descend also from the cross!”

Likewise also the chief priests, mocking with the scribes and elders, were saying,

“Others He saved; Himself He is not able to save. He is King of Israel — let him descend now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.

He has trusted on God; let Him deliver Him now if He wants Him. For He said that, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

And likewise even the robbers, those having been crucified with Him, were upbraiding Him.

The Death of Jesus

And from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” — that is, “My God, My God, so why have You forsaken Me?”

And some of those having stood there, listening, were saying that, “This man calls Elijah.”

And immediately one of them, having run and having taken a sponge and having filled it with vinegar and having put it on a reed, was giving Him to drink.

But the rest were saying, “Wait! Let us see whether Elijah comes to save Him.”

And Jesus, having cried again in a loud voice, yielded up His spirit.

And behold, the veil of the temple was torn into two from top until bottom; and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split,

and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints having fallen asleep were raised;

and having gone forth out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.

And the centurion and those with him keeping guard over Jesus, having seen the earthquake and the things that were happening, feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was God’s Son.”

And there were there many women looking on from afar off, who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him,

among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and of Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

The Burial of Jesus

And when evening had arrived, a rich man from Arimathea came, named Joseph, who himself also was discipled to Jesus.

He, having gone to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded it to be given up.

And Joseph, having taken the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth

and placed it in his new tomb which he had cut in the rock; and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away.

And Mary the Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guards at the Tomb

And on the next day, which is after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together before Pilate,

saying, “Sir, we have remembered how that deceiver said while living, ‘After three days I arise.’

Command therefore the tomb to be secured until the third day, otherwise His disciples, having come, may steal Him away and may say to the people, ‘He is risen from the dead.’ And the last error will be worse than the first.”

Pilate was saying to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.”

And having gone, they made the tomb secure, having sealed the stone, with the guard.
