Matthew21

The Triumphal Entry

And when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, on the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,

saying to them, “Go into the village which is in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied and a colt with her; having untied them, bring them to Me.

And if anyone may say anything to you, you will say that the Lord has need of them; and immediately he will send them.”

And this has come to pass that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying:

“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, even upon a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”

And the disciples, having gone and having done even as Jesus directed them,

brought the donkey and the colt, and put the cloaks upon them, and He sat on them.

And the very great crowd spread their own cloaks on the road, and others were cutting down branches from the trees and were spreading them on the road.

And the crowds which are going before Him and those following were crying out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

And when He was entering into Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?”

And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, the One from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

And Jesus entered into the temple and cast out all those selling and buying in the temple, and He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling the doves.

And He says to them, “It has been written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer’; but you yourselves make it a den of robbers.”

And blind and lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.

But the chief priests and the scribes, having seen the wonders that He did and the children who are crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” were indignant

and said to Him, “Do You hear what these say?” And Jesus says to them, “Yes. Did you never read that ‘Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings You have prepared for Yourself praise’?”

And having left them, He went out of the city to Bethany, and He passed the night there.

The Barren Fig Tree

And early, as He was coming back into the city, He became hungry;

and having seen one fig tree along the road, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves alone. And He says to it, “No more may there be fruit from you to the age.” And immediately the fig tree withered.

And the disciples, having seen it, marvelled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”

And Jesus, answering, said to them, “Amen I say to you, if you shall have faith and shall not doubt, not only will you do the miracle of the fig tree, but even if you shall say to this mountain, ‘Be taken away and be cast into the sea,’ it will come to pass.

And all things, as much as you shall ask in the prayer, believing, you will receive.”

Jesus’ Authority Challenged

And when He was coming into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him teaching, saying, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?”

And Jesus, answering, said to them, “I myself also will ask you one thing, which if you shall tell Me, I myself also will say to you by what authority I do these things.

The baptism of John, from where was it? From heaven or from men?” And they were reasoning among themselves, saying, “If we shall say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe in him?’

But if we shall say, ‘From men,’ we fear the multitude; for all hold John as a prophet.”

And answering Jesus, they said, “We do not know.” And He Himself also was saying to them, “Neither do I myself tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

But what do you think? A man had two sons; and having come to the first, he said, ‘Son, go work today in the vineyard.’

And he, answering, said, ‘I do not want to.’ But afterward, having repented, he went.

And having come to the other, he said likewise. And he, answering, said, ‘I myself will, Sir,’ and he did not go.

Which of the two did the will of the father?” They say, “The first.” Jesus says to them, “Amen I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes go before you into the kingdom of God.

For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe in him; but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed in him. And you yourselves, having seen it, did not even repent afterward, to believe him.

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants

Hear another parable. There was a man, a master of a house, who planted a vineyard and placed a fence around it, and he dug a winepress in it and built a tower, and he rented it out to farmers and traveled abroad.

And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the farmers to receive his fruits.

And the farmers, having taken his servants, beat the one, and killed another, and stoned another.

Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did to them likewise.

And afterward he sent to them his son, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

But the farmers, having seen the son, said among themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and let us have his inheritance.’

And having taken him, they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him.

When therefore the master of the vineyard may come, what will he do to those farmers?”

They say to Him, “The wretches — He will destroy them grievously, and he will rent out the vineyard to other farmers who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

Jesus says to them: “Did you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which those building rejected, this has become the head of the corner. From the Lord was this, and it is marvellous in our eyes’?

Because of this I say to you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and will be given to a people producing its fruits.”

[“And the one having fallen on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it may fall, it will grind him to powder.”]

And the chief priests and the Pharisees, having heard His parables, knew that He speaks about them.

And seeking to lay hold of Him, they feared the crowds, because they were holding Him to be a prophet.
