Lamentations4

The Distress of Zion

How the gold is dimmed, the good pure gold changed! The holy stones are poured out at the head of every street.

The precious sons of Zion, weighed against fine gold — how they are reckoned as jars of clay, the work of the hands of a potter!

Even jackals draw out the breast; they suckle their cubs. The daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

The tongue of the suckling clings to his palate in thirst; little ones ask for bread — there is none breaking it for them.

Those who ate delicacies are desolate in the streets; those brought up in scarlet embrace ash heaps.

And the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment, and no hands were laid on her.

Her nazirites were purer than snow, whiter than milk; they were ruddier of body than corals, their shape was sapphire.

Their form is darker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones; it is dried up, it has become like wood.

Better were the slain of the sword than the slain of famine — for these waste away, pierced through, for want of the produce of the field.

The hands of compassionate women have boiled their own children; they became their food in the breaking of the daughter of my people.

The LORD has spent his wrath; he has poured out his burning anger and kindled a fire in Zion, and it has devoured her foundations.

The kings of the earth did not believe, nor all the inhabitants of the world, that foe and enemy would enter the gates of Jerusalem.

For the sins of her prophets, the iniquities of her priests, who shed in her midst the blood of the righteous —

they wandered blind in the streets, defiled with blood, so that none could touch their garments.

Depart! Unclean! they called to them. Depart, depart, do not touch! For they fled and also wandered; they said among the nations: They will not go on sojourning.

The face of the LORD has scattered them; he will not go on regarding them. They did not lift the faces of the priests; they did not favor the elders.

Still our eyes were failing for our help — a breath. In our watching we watched for a nation that does not save.

They hunted our steps from walking in our squares. Our end drew near, our days were filled, for our end had come.

Swifter were our pursuers than the eagles of the heavens; on the mountains they chased us hot, in the wilderness they lay in ambush for us.

The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was captured in their pits — of whom we said: In his shadow we will live among the nations.

Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, dwelling in the land of Uz! To you also the cup will pass; you will be drunk and strip yourself bare.

Your iniquity is finished, daughter of Zion; he will not go on exiling you. He has attended to your iniquity, daughter of Edom; he has uncovered your sins.
