Lamentations1

How Lonely Lies the City!

How she sits alone, the city great with people! She has become like a widow — great among the nations, a princess among the provinces, she has become forced labor.

She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are on her cheek. She has no comforter from all her lovers; all her companions have been treacherous to her, they have become enemies to her.

Judah has gone into exile from affliction and from much servitude. She sits among the nations; she has found no rest. All her pursuers have overtaken her between the straits.

The ways of Zion mourn for lack of those coming to the appointed feast. All her gates are desolate; her priests groan, her virgins are grieving, and she — it is bitter for her.

Her foes have become the head, her enemies are at ease; for the LORD has grieved her for the greatness of her transgressions. Her little ones have gone into captivity before the foe.

And from the daughter of Zion all her splendor has gone out. Her princes have become like deer that have found no pasture, and they have gone without strength before the pursuer.

Jerusalem has remembered, in the days of her affliction and her wanderings, all her desirable things that were from the days of old — when her people fell into the hand of the foe, and there was no helper for her. The foes saw her; they laughed at her downfall.

Jerusalem has sinned a sin; therefore she has become an object of shaking. All who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness. She too groans and turns backward.

Her uncleanness is in her skirts; she did not remember her end. And she has come down astonishingly; there is no comforter for her. See, LORD, my affliction, for the enemy has magnified himself.

The foe has spread out his hand over all her desirable things; for she has seen nations come into her sanctuary — those you commanded should not come into the assembly for you.

All her people groan, seeking bread; they have given their desirable things for food, to bring back the soul. See, LORD, and look, for I have become worthless.

Is it nothing to you, all who pass by on the way? Look and see whether there is pain like my pain, which was dealt out to me, with which the LORD grieved me in the day of his burning anger.

From on high he sent fire into my bones, and it went down into them. He spread a net for my feet; he turned me backward. He made me desolate, sick all the day.

The yoke of my transgressions is bound fast by his hand; they are twined together, they have come up on my neck. He has made my strength stumble. The Lord has given me into hands I cannot rise against.

The Lord has flung down all my mighty men in my midst. He has called an appointed time against me, to break my young men. The Lord has trodden a winepress for the virgin daughter of Judah.

For these I am weeping. My eye, my eye runs down with water, for a comforter is far from me, one who would bring back my soul. My sons are desolate, for the enemy has prevailed.

Zion has spread out her hands; there is no comforter for her. The LORD has commanded concerning Jacob that his foes should be around him; Jerusalem has become an impurity among them.

Righteous is he, the LORD, for I have rebelled against his mouth. Hear now, all the peoples, and see my pain: my virgins and my young men have gone into captivity.

I called to my lovers; they deceived me. My priests and my elders expired in the city while they sought food for themselves, to bring back their soul.

See, LORD, for I am in distress. My bowels churn; my heart is turned within me, for I have utterly rebelled. Outside the sword bereaves; inside the house it is like death.

They have heard that I groan; there is no comforter for me. All my enemies have heard of my evil; they are glad that you have done it. Bring the day you have called, and let them be like me.

Let all their evil come before you, and deal out to them as you have dealt out to me for all my transgressions; for my groanings are many, and my heart is faint.
