Judges12

Jephthah Defeats Ephraim

And the men of Ephraim were called together, and they crossed over northward; and they said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the sons of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire!”

And Jephthah said to them: “I and my people were in a great contention with the sons of Ammon; and I called you, but you did not save me from their hand.

And when I saw that you would not save, I put my life in my palm and crossed over to the sons of Ammon, and the LORD gave them into my hand. So why have you come up to me this day, to fight against me?”

And Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they had said, “You Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim — in the midst of Ephraim, in the midst of Manasseh.”

And Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan against Ephraim. And it was, when the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me cross over,” that the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” And if he said, “No,”

then they said to him, “Say now ‘Shibboleth.’” And he would say “Sibboleth,” for he could not manage to speak it right; and they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. And there fell at that time, of Ephraim, forty-two thousand.

And Jephthah judged Israel six years. And Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in the cities of Gilead.

Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon

And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

And he had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he sent outside, and thirty daughters he brought in for his sons from outside. And he judged Israel seven years.

And Ibzan died, and was buried at Bethlehem.

And after him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

And Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried at Aijalon, in the land of Zebulun.

And after him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.

And he had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. And he judged Israel eight years.

And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried at Pirathon, in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekite.
