And it was, when all the kings of the Amorite who were across the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanite who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the sons of Israel until they had crossed over, that their heart melted, and there was no spirit in them anymore before the sons of Israel.
At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make for yourself knives of flint, and circumcise the sons of Israel again, a second time.”
And Joshua made for himself knives of flint, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
And this is the reason Joshua circumcised: all the people who came out of Egypt, the males, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way, after they came out of Egypt.
For all the people who came out had been circumcised; but all the people born in the wilderness on the way, after they came out of Egypt, had not been circumcised.
For forty years the sons of Israel walked in the wilderness, until all the nation had come to an end — the men of war who came out of Egypt — who did not listen to the voice of the LORD, to whom the LORD swore that he would not let them see the land that the LORD had sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
And their sons he raised up in their place; them Joshua circumcised, for they were uncircumcised, since they had not been circumcised on the way.
And it was, when all the nation had finished being circumcised, that they stayed in their places in the camp until they revived.
And the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you.” And the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day.
And the sons of Israel camped at Gilgal, and they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, in the plains of Jericho.
And they ate of the produce of the land on the day after the Passover — unleavened bread and roasted grain — on that very day.
And the manna ceased on the next day, when they ate of the produce of the land; and there was no longer manna for the sons of Israel, and they ate of the yield of the land of Canaan in that year.
The Commander of the LORD’s Army
And it was, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked — and look, a man was standing opposite him, with his sword drawn in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our foes?”
And he said, “No — for I am the commander of the army of the LORD; now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and bowed down, and said to him, “What does my lord speak to his servant?”
And the commander of the army of the LORD said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place on which you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
