Forty-Eight Cities for the Levites
And the heads of the fathers of the Levites came near to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel,
and they spoke to them at Shiloh, in the land of Canaan, saying, “The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to live in, with their pasturelands for our livestock.”
And the sons of Israel gave the Levites, from their inheritance, according to the mouth of the LORD, these cities with their pasturelands.
And the lot went out for the families of the Kohathite. And the sons of Aaron the priest, from the Levites, had by lot, from the tribe of Judah, and from the tribe of the Simeonite, and from the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.
And the rest of the sons of Kohath had by lot, from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and from the tribe of Dan, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.
And the sons of Gershon had by lot, from the families of the tribe of Issachar, and from the tribe of Asher, and from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.
The sons of Merari, by their families, had, from the tribe of Reuben, and from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.
And the sons of Israel gave the Levites these cities with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded by the hand of Moses, by lot.
And they gave, from the tribe of the sons of Judah and from the tribe of the sons of Simeon, these cities, which are mentioned by name.
And they were for the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathite, of the sons of Levi — for the lot was theirs first.
And they gave them Kiriath-arba — Arba was the father of Anak — that is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with its pastureland around it.
But the field of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his holding.
And to the sons of Aaron the priest they gave the city of refuge for the murderer, Hebron, with its pastureland; and Libnah with its pastureland,
and Jattir with its pastureland, and Eshtemoa with its pastureland,
and Holon with its pastureland, and Debir with its pastureland,
and Ain with its pastureland, and Juttah with its pastureland, Beth-shemesh with its pastureland — nine cities from these two tribes;
and from the tribe of Benjamin: Gibeon with its pastureland, Geba with its pastureland,
Anathoth with its pastureland, and Almon with its pastureland — four cities.
All the cities of the sons of Aaron, the priests: thirteen cities with their pasturelands.
And the families of the sons of Kohath, the Levites, the rest of the sons of Kohath — the cities of their lot were from the tribe of Ephraim.
And they gave them the city of refuge for the murderer, Shechem, with its pastureland, in the hill country of Ephraim; and Gezer with its pastureland,
and Kibzaim with its pastureland, and Beth-horon with its pastureland — four cities;
and from the tribe of Dan: Elteke with its pastureland, Gibbethon with its pastureland,
Aijalon with its pastureland, Gath-rimmon with its pastureland — four cities;
and from the half-tribe of Manasseh: Taanach with its pastureland, and Gath-rimmon with its pastureland — two cities.
All the cities: ten, with their pasturelands, for the families of the rest of the sons of Kohath.
And to the sons of Gershon, of the families of the Levites: from the half-tribe of Manasseh, the city of refuge for the murderer, Golan in Bashan, with its pastureland, and Beeshterah with its pastureland — two cities;
and from the tribe of Issachar: Kishion with its pastureland, Daberath with its pastureland,
Jarmuth with its pastureland, En-gannim with its pastureland — four cities;
and from the tribe of Asher: Mishal with its pastureland, Abdon with its pastureland,
Helkath with its pastureland, and Rehob with its pastureland — four cities;
and from the tribe of Naphtali: the city of refuge for the murderer, Kedesh in Galilee, with its pastureland, and Hammoth-dor with its pastureland, and Kartan with its pastureland — three cities.
All the cities of the Gershonite, by their families: thirteen cities with their pasturelands.
And to the families of the sons of Merari, the rest of the Levites: from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its pastureland, Kartah with its pastureland,
Dimnah with its pastureland, Nahalal with its pastureland — four cities;
and from the tribe of Reuben: Bezer with its pastureland, and Jahaz with its pastureland,
Kedemoth with its pastureland, and Mephaath with its pastureland — four cities;
and from the tribe of Gad: the city of refuge for the murderer, Ramoth in Gilead, with its pastureland, and Mahanaim with its pastureland,
Heshbon with its pastureland, Jazer with its pastureland — four cities in all.
All the cities for the sons of Merari, by their families, the rest of the families of the Levites — their lot was twelve cities.
All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the holding of the sons of Israel: forty-eight cities with their pasturelands.
These cities each had its pastureland around it — so for all these cities.
And the LORD gave Israel all the land that he had sworn to give to their fathers; and they possessed it and lived in it.
And the LORD gave them rest all around, according to all that he had sworn to their fathers; and not a man of all their enemies stood before them — all their enemies the LORD gave into their hand.
Not a word fell of all the good word that the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. It all came to pass.
