The Feeding of the Five Thousand

After these things Jesus went away over the Sea of Galilee — the Sea of Tiberias.

Now a great crowd was following after Him, because they were experiencing the signs which He was doing upon those being sick.

Now Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He was sitting with His disciples.

Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.

Jesus then, having lifted up the eyes and having seen that a great crowd is coming to Him, says to Philip, “From where may we buy bread, that these may eat?”

Now this He was saying testing him; for He Himself knew what He was about to do.

Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of loaves are not sufficient for them, that each one may receive a little piece.”

One of His disciples, Andrew the brother of Simon Peter, says to Him,

“There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fish; but what are these for so many?”

Jesus said, “Make the men recline.” Now there was much grass in the place. The men reclined therefore, the number about five thousand.

Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks He distributed to those reclining, likewise also of the fish, as much as they were wishing.

Now when they were filled, He says to His disciples, “Gather together the fragments having been over and above, so that nothing may be lost.”

They gathered together therefore, and filled twelve hand-baskets of fragments from the five barley loaves which exceeded to those having eaten.

The people therefore, having seen what sign He had done, were saying that “This is truly the prophet who is coming into the world.”

Jesus therefore, having known that they are about to come and to seize Him that they may make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain Himself alone.

Jesus Walks on Water

Now when evening became, His disciples went down to the sea,

and having climbed into a boat, they were going over the sea to Capernaum. And it had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them,

and the sea was agitated by a strong wind blowing.

Having rowed therefore about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they see Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.

And He says to them, “I myself am He; do not fear.”

They were willing then to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

Jesus the Bread of Life

On the next day the crowd which was already standing on the other side of the sea, having seen that no other boat was there except one, and that Jesus did not go with His disciples into the boat but His disciples went away alone —

other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they ate the bread when the Lord was giving thanks —

when therefore the crowd saw that Jesus is not there, nor are His disciples, they themselves climbed into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

And having found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when have You come here?”

Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek Me not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were satisfied.

Work not for the food that is perishing, but for the food which is enduring unto life eternal, which the Son of Man will give to you; for Him the Father has sealed, God.”

They said therefore to Him, “What shall we do, that we may be doing the works of God?”

Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you may believe in Him whom He has sent.”

They said therefore to Him, “What then do You Yourself do as a sign, that we may see and may believe You? What work do You perform?

Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, even as it is written, ‘Bread from heaven He gave them to eat.’”

Jesus said therefore to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, Moses has not given you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

For the bread of God is the One coming down out of heaven and giving life to the world.”

They said therefore to Him, “Sir, always give us this bread.”

Jesus said to them, “I myself am the bread of life; the one coming to Me myself will certainly not hunger, and the one believing in Me myself will certainly not thirst at any time.

But I said to you that you have also seen Me, and yet do not believe.

All that the Father gives Me will come to Me myself, and the one coming to Me myself I shall certainly not cast out,

for I have come down from heaven not that I may do My own will, but the will of the One having sent Me.

Now this is the will of the One having sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I may lose none of it, but may raise it up in the last day.

For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who is beholding the Son and believing in Him may have life eternal, and I myself will raise him up in the last day.”

The Jews therefore were grumbling about Him, because He said, “I myself am the bread having come down from heaven;”

and they were saying, “Is this not Jesus the son of Joseph, of whom we ourselves know the father and the mother? How then says He that ‘From heaven I have come down’?”

Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble with one another.

No one is able to come to Me unless the Father, the one having sent Me, shall draw him; and I myself will raise him up in the last day.

It is written in the prophets: ‘And they will all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard from the Father and has learned comes to Me myself;

not for that anyone has seen the Father, except the One being from God — He has seen the Father.

Amen, amen, I say to you, the one believing has life eternal.

I myself am the bread of life.

Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and died;

this is the bread coming down from heaven, that anyone may eat of it and may not die.

I myself am the living bread having come down from heaven; if anyone shall have eaten of this bread, he will live to the age. And the bread also that I myself will give is My flesh, for the life of the world.”

The Jews therefore were arguing with one another, saying, “How is this man able to give us His flesh to eat?”

Jesus said therefore to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you shall have eaten the flesh of the Son of Man and shall have drunk His blood, you have no life in yourselves.

The one eating My flesh and drinking My blood has life eternal, and I myself will raise him up in the last day.

For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.

The one eating My flesh and drinking My blood abides in Me myself, and I myself in him.

Even as the living Father sent Me and I myself live because of the Father, so also the one feeding on Me, he also will live because of Me myself.

This is the bread having come down from heaven, not even as the fathers ate and died; the one eating this bread will live to the age.”

Many Disciples Turn Back

These things He said in the synagogue, teaching in Capernaum.

Many therefore of His disciples, having heard, said, “This word is difficult; who is able to hear it?”

But Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples are grumbling about this, said to them, “Does this offend you?

What if then you shall see the Son of Man ascending where He was before?

The Spirit is the one giving life; the flesh profits nothing. The declarations that I myself have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.

But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who are those not believing, and who it is who will betray Him.

And He was saying, “Because of this have I said to you that no one is able to come to Me unless it shall be granted him from the Father.”

From that time many out of His disciples went away to the back, and no longer were walking with Him.

Peter’s Confession of Faith

Jesus said therefore to the Twelve, “Surely you yourselves are not also wishing to go away?”

Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have declarations of life eternal,

and we ourselves have believed and have known that You are the Holy One of God.”

Jesus answered them, “Did I myself not choose you the Twelve, and of you one is a devil?”

Now He was speaking of Judas son of Simon Iscariot; for he was about to betray Him, one of the Twelve.
