The Lantern

John3

Jesus and Nicodemus

Now there was a man of the Pharisees, Nicodemus his name, a ruler of the Jews.

He came to Him by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God a teacher; for no one is able to do these signs that You do unless God shall be with him.”

Jesus answered and said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless someone shall be born from above, he is not able to see the kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus says to Him, “How is a man able to be born, being old? He is not able to enter a second time into the womb of his mother and be born?”

Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless someone shall be born of water and of the Spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God.

That born of the flesh is flesh, and that born of the Spirit is spirit.

Do not wonder that I said to you, It is necessary for you all to be born from above.

The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know from where it comes and where it goes; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How are these things able to be?”

Jesus answered and said to him, “You yourself are the teacher of Israel, and these things you do not know?

Amen, amen, I say to you that what we know we speak, and what we have seen we bear witness to, and you do not receive our witness.

If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

And no one has gone up into heaven except the One having come down out of heaven, the Son of Man.

And even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, thus it behooves the Son of Man to be lifted up,

so that everyone who is believing in Him may have life eternal.

For thus God loved the world, that He gave the Son, the only begotten, so that everyone who is believing in Him may not perish but may have life eternal.

For God did not send the Son into the world that He may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through Him.

The one believing on Him is not judged; but the one not believing has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

And this is the judgement, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light; for their deeds were evil.

For everyone practicing evil hates the Light and does not come to the Light, so that his works may not be exposed;

but the one practicing the truth comes to the Light, that his works may be manifest, that they have been done in God.”

John’s Testimony about Jesus

After these things Jesus came, and His disciples, into the Judean land, and there He was staying with them and was baptizing.

Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because many waters were there. And they were coming and were being baptized;

for John was not yet cast into prison.

There arose then a debate among the disciples of John with a certain Jew about purification.

And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you yourself have borne witness, behold, He baptizes, and all are coming to Him.”

John answered and said, “A man is able to receive not even one thing unless it shall be given him from heaven.

You yourselves bear me witness that I said that: I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before Him.

The one having the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, the one having stood and listening for him, rejoices with joy because of the voice of the bridegroom. This joy of mine therefore has been fulfilled.

It behooves Him to increase, but me to decrease.”

The One coming from above is above all. The one being from the earth is from the earth and speaks from the earth. The One coming from heaven is above all;

what He has seen and heard, this He testifies, and no one receives His testimony.

The one having received His testimony has set his seal that God is true.

For He whom God sent speaks the declarations of God; for He does not give the Spirit by measure.

The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.

The one believing in the Son has life eternal; but the one not obeying the Son will not behold life, but the wrath of God abides on him.
