John20

The Resurrection

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene comes early to the tomb, it being still dark, and she sees the stone removed from the tomb.

She runs therefore and she comes to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus was loving, and she says to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

Peter went forth therefore, and the other disciple, and they were coming to the tomb;

now the two were running together, and the other disciple ran ahead quicker than Peter and came first to the tomb.

And having stooped down, he sees the linen cloths lying there; he did not, however, enter.

Simon Peter comes then also, following after him, and he entered into the tomb, and sees the linen cloths lying there,

and the soudarion which was upon His head not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up by itself in a place.

Then therefore the other disciple also entered, the one having come first to the tomb, and he saw and believed;

for they did not yet know the Scripture, that it is necessary for Him to rise out from the dead.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

The disciples went away therefore again to their homes.

But Mary had stood at the tomb outside, weeping. As therefore she was weeping, she stooped down into the tomb,

and she sees two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus was laying.

And they say to her, “Woman, why weep you?” She says to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

Having said these things, she turned to the back and she sees Jesus standing there, and did not know that it is Jesus.

Jesus says to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek?” She, thinking that He is the gardener, says to Him, “Sir, if you yourself carried him off, tell me where you have laid Him, and I myself will take him away.”

Jesus says to her, “Mary.” Having turned around, she says to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni,” that is to say, Teacher.

Jesus says to her: “Do not touch Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go, however, to My brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’”

Mary Magdalene comes, reporting to the disciples that “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

When therefore it is evening of that same day, the first of the week, and the doors shut where the disciples were through the fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and He says to them, “Peace to you.”

And having said this, He showed the hands and the side to them. The disciples rejoiced then, having seen the Lord.

Jesus said therefore to them again, “Peace to you; even as the Father has sent Me forth, I myself also send you.”

And having said this, He breathed on them and He says to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

If of any you may forgive the sins, they have been forgiven to them; if of any you may retain, they have been retained.”

Jesus Appears to Thomas

But Thomas, one of the Twelve, who is being named Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

The other disciples were saying therefore to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I shall see in His hands the mark of the nails, and shall put my finger into the mark of the nails, and shall put my hand into His side, I shall certainly not believe.”

And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus comes, the doors being shut, and He stood in the midst and said, “Peace to you.”

Then He says to Thomas, “Bring your finger here and see My hands, and bring your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

Thomas answered and said to Him, “O my Lord and O my God!”

Jesus says to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; happy are those not having seen and yet having believed.”

The Purpose of John’s Book

Many indeed therefore also other signs Jesus did in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book;

but these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
