John10

Jesus the Good Shepherd

“Amen, amen, I say to you, the one not entering in through the door to the fold of the sheep, but climbing up another way, he is a thief and a robber;

but the one entering in through the door is shepherd of the sheep.

To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep listen to his voice, and his own sheep he shouts to by name and leads them out.

When he may bring out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow after him, because they know his voice.

After a stranger, however, they will certainly not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”

This allegory Jesus spoke to them; they, however, did not know what it was that He was saying to them.

Jesus said therefore again, “Amen, amen, I say to you that I myself am the door of the sheep.

All, as many as came before Me, are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not listen to them.

I myself am the door; through Me if anyone shall enter in, he will be saved, and he will go in and will go out and will find pasture.

The thief does not come except that he shall steal and shall kill and shall destroy; I myself came that they may have life, and may have it in excess.

I myself am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep;

the hired servant, however, not being the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, he sees the wolf coming and he leaves the sheep and flees — and the wolf snatches them and scatters —

because he is a hired servant, and he is not himself concerned about the sheep.

I myself am the good shepherd, and I know My own, and those Mine know Me,

even as the Father knows Me, I myself also know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; those also it behooves Me to bring, and they will listen to My voice, and they will become one flock, with one shepherd.

Because of this the Father loves Me, because I myself lay down My life, that I may take it again.

No one takes it away from Me, but I myself lay it down of Myself. Authority I have to lay it down, and authority I have to take it again; this commandment I received from My Father.”

Division again there was among the Jews on account of these words.

Now many of them were saying, “He has a demon and is insane; why do you listen to Him?”

Others were saying, “These declarations are not those of one demonised; surely a demon is not able to open the eyes of the blind?”

Jesus at the Feast of Dedication

The Feast of Dedication took place at the time at Jerusalem; it was winter,

and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the porch of Solomon.

The Jews therefore encircled Him and they were saying to Him, “Until when do You hold our soul in suspense? If You Yourself are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I myself do in the name of My Father, these bear witness concerning Me;

but you yourselves do not believe, because you are not from among My sheep.

My sheep listen to My voice, and I myself know them, and they follow Me,

and I myself give them life eternal, and they shall certainly not perish to the age, and no one will ever seize them out of My hand.

My Father, which has given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one is able to seize them out of the Father’s hand.

I myself and the Father are one.”

The Jews took up stones again, that they may stone Him.

Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from the Father; because of which of these works do you stone Me myself?”

The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You Yourself, being a man, make Yourself God.”

Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law that ‘I have said, You are gods’?

If he called them gods to whom the word of God came — and the Scripture is not able to be broken —

of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, do you yourselves say that ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, ‘I am Son of God’?

If I do not the works of My Father, then do not believe Me;

but if I do, even if you shall not believe Me myself, believe in the works, so that you may know and may understand that in Me myself is the Father, and I myself in the Father.”

They were seeking therefore again to seize Him; but He went forth out of their hand.

John’s Testimony Confirmed

And He departed again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was at first baptizing, and He stayed there.

And many came to Him, and were saying that “John indeed did no sign, but everything, as much as John said about this man, was true.”

And many believed in Him there.
