Job: My Redeemer Lives
And Job answered and said:
How long will you torment my soul, and crush me with words?
These ten times you have humiliated me; you are not ashamed to wrong me.
And if indeed I have gone astray, my straying lodges with me.
If indeed you would magnify yourselves against me, and argue my disgrace against me —
know then that God has bent me out of the right, and has closed his net around me.
Look, I cry out, “Violence!” and I am not answered; I cry for help, and there is no judgment.
He has walled up my path, and I cannot pass; and he sets darkness on my ways.
He has stripped my glory from me, and taken the crown from my head.
He tears me down on every side, and I am gone; and he has pulled up my hope like a tree.
And he has kindled his anger against me, and counted me for himself as one of his adversaries.
Together his troops come, and they build up their road against me, and camp around my tent.
He has put my brothers far from me, and those who know me are only estranged from me.
My relatives have ceased, and those who knew me have forgotten me.
The guests of my house and my maidservants count me a stranger; I have become a foreigner in their eyes.
I call my servant, and he does not answer; with my own mouth I plead with him.
My breath is strange to my wife, and I am loathsome to the sons of my own belly.
Even young boys despise me; I rise, and they speak against me.
All the men of my circle abhor me, and those I loved have turned against me.
My bone clings to my skin and to my flesh, and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.
Have pity on me, have pity on me, you my friends — for the hand of God has touched me.
Why do you pursue me like God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
Oh that my words were written! Oh that they were inscribed in a scroll —
with an iron stylus and lead, cut in the rock forever!
And I — I know that my redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the dust.
And after my skin has been struck off — this! — and from my flesh I shall see God,
whom I myself shall see for myself, and my eyes shall see, and not a stranger. My kidneys are consumed within me.
If you say, “How we will pursue him!” — and that the root of the matter is found in me —
be afraid for yourselves of the sword; for wrath brings the punishments of the sword, so that you may know there is a judgment.
