Job16

Job Decries His Comforters

And Job answered and said:

I have heard many things like these. Comforters of trouble are you all.

Is there an end to windy words? Or what provokes you, that you answer?

I also could speak as you do, if your soul were in the place of my soul. I could join words together against you, and shake my head at you.

I could strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips would hold back your pain.

If I speak, my pain is not held back; and if I cease, what goes from me?

But now he has wearied me; you have laid waste all my company.

And you have shriveled me up — it has become a witness; and my leanness rises up against me, and answers to my face.

His anger has torn, and has borne a grudge against me; he has gnashed at me with his teeth. My adversary sharpens his eyes at me.

They have gaped at me with their mouth; in reproach they have struck my cheeks; together they mass themselves against me.

God delivers me over to a wrongdoer, and throws me into the hands of the wicked.

I was at ease, and he shattered me; and he seized me by the neck and dashed me to pieces; and he set me up for himself as a target.

His archers surround me; he splits open my kidneys and does not spare; he pours my gall out on the ground.

He breaks me, breach upon breach; he runs at me like a warrior.

I have sewn sackcloth over my hide, and thrust my horn into the dust.

My face is reddened with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death —

though there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure.

O earth, do not cover my blood, and let there be no place for my cry.

Even now, look — my witness is in the heavens, and he who testifies for me is in the heights.

My scorners are my friends; to God my eye drips.

And let him argue for a man with God, and for a son of man with his friend.

For the years of number come, and I shall go the way from which I shall not return.
