Jeremiah49

Judgment on the Ammonites

Concerning the sons of Ammon. Thus says the LORD: Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then has their king taken possession of Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?

Therefore, see, days are coming — the utterance of the LORD — when I will make heard against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon the shout of war; and she will become a desolate mound, and her daughters will be burned with fire. And Israel will dispossess those who dispossessed him, says the LORD.

Howl, Heshbon, for Ai is devastated! Cry out, daughters of Rabbah; gird sackcloth, lament and rove among the walls; for their king will go into exile, his priests and his princes together.

Why do you boast in the valleys — your flowing valley — turning daughter, trusting in her treasures: Who will come against me?

See, I am bringing dread on you — the utterance of the Lord GOD of hosts — from all around you; and you will be driven out, each straight before him, with none to gather the wanderer.

And afterward I will restore the fortunes of the sons of Ammon — the utterance of the LORD.

Judgment on Edom

Concerning Edom. Thus says the LORD of hosts: Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the understanding? Has their wisdom gone rancid?

Flee, turn back, go deep to dwell, inhabitants of Dedan; for the calamity of Esau I have brought upon him, the time I attended to him.

If grape-gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves in the night, they would destroy only their fill.

But I myself have stripped Esau bare, I have uncovered his hiding places, and he cannot conceal himself. His seed is devastated, and his brothers and his neighbors, and he is not.

Leave your orphans; I will keep them alive. And let your widows trust in me.

For thus says the LORD: See, those whose judgment was not to drink the cup will surely drink; and you — will you be held innocent? You will not be held innocent, for you will surely drink.

For by myself I have sworn — the utterance of the LORD — that Bozrah will become a horror, a reproach, a waste and a curse; and all her cities will become everlasting ruins.

A report I have heard from the LORD, and an envoy is sent among the nations: Gather and come against her, and rise for the war!

For see, I have made you small among the nations, despised among mankind.

Your fearsomeness has deceived you, the insolence of your heart, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill. Though you make your nest high like the eagle, from there I will bring you down — the utterance of the LORD.

And Edom will become a horror; everyone passing by her will be appalled and will hiss at all her blows.

As at the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and her neighbors, says the LORD, no man will dwell there and no son of man will sojourn in her.

See, like a lion he comes up from the thickets of the Jordan to a lasting pasture. But in a moment I will make him run from her; and who is the chosen one I will appoint over her? For who is like me, and who will summon me, and who is this shepherd who will stand before my face?

Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, which he counseled against Edom, and his thoughts, which he thought against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the little ones of the flock will drag them away; surely he will make their pasture a desolation over them.

At the sound of their falling the earth quakes; an outcry — at the Sea of Reeds her voice is heard.

See, like an eagle he comes up and swoops, and spreads his wings over Bozrah; and the heart of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in her distress.

Judgment on Damascus

Concerning Damascus. Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard an evil report; they melt. On the sea there is anxiety; it cannot be quiet.

Damascus has gone slack; she has turned to flee, and shivering has seized her; distress and pangs have taken hold of her like a woman giving birth.

How is the city of praise not left, the town of my rejoicing!

Therefore her young men will fall in her squares, and all the men of war will be silenced in that day — the utterance of the LORD of hosts.

And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it will devour the citadels of Ben-hadad.

Judgment on Kedar and Hazor

Concerning Kedar and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon struck. Thus says the LORD: Arise, go up to Kedar, and devastate the sons of the east!

Their tents and their flocks they will take; their curtains and all their vessels and their camels they will carry off for themselves. And they will call out against them: terror all around!

Flee, wander far, go deep to dwell, inhabitants of Hazor — the utterance of the LORD; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has counseled a counsel against you and thought a thought against you.

Arise, go up to a nation at ease, dwelling in security — the utterance of the LORD — with no doors and no bar for it; they dwell alone.

And their camels will become plunder, and the tumult of their livestock spoil; and I will scatter to every wind those who clip the corners of their hair, and from all its sides I will bring their calamity — the utterance of the LORD.

And Hazor will become a lair of jackals, a desolation forever. No man will dwell there and no son of man will sojourn in her.

Judgment on Elam

That which came as the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying:

Thus says the LORD of hosts: See, I am breaking the bow of Elam, the first of their might.

And I will bring against Elam four winds from the four ends of the heavens, and I will scatter them to all these winds; and there will be no nation to which the outcasts of Elam do not come.

And I will shatter Elam before their enemies and before those who seek their soul; and I will bring on them evil, the burning of my anger — the utterance of the LORD. And I will send the sword after them until I have finished them.

And I will set my throne in Elam, and I will destroy from there king and princes — the utterance of the LORD.

And it will be in the end of days that I will restore the fortunes of Elam — the utterance of the LORD.
