Jeremiah43

Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

And it was, when Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all the words of the LORD their God, with which the LORD their God had sent him to them — all these words —

that Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the insolent men said, saying to Jeremiah: You are speaking falsehood. The LORD our God did not send you to say: Do not come to Egypt to sojourn there.

For Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us, in order to give us into the hand of the Chaldeans, to put us to death and to exile us to Babylon.

And Johanan son of Kareah and all the princes of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the LORD, to stay in the land of Judah.

And Johanan son of Kareah and all the princes of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations where they had been driven, to sojourn in the land of Judah —

the mighty men and the women and the little ones and the daughters of the king, and every soul whom Nebuzaradan the chief of the guards had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah —

and they came to the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the LORD; and they came as far as Tahpanhes.

And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying:

Take in your hand great stones and hide them in the mortar in the brick pavement that is at the entrance of the house of Pharaoh in Tahpanhes, before the eyes of Judean men,

and say to them: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: See, I am sending and taking Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden; and he will spread his canopy over them.

And he will come and strike the land of Egypt: whoever is for death, to death; and whoever is for captivity, to captivity; and whoever is for the sword, to the sword.

And I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive; and he will wrap himself in the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself in his garment; and he will go out from there in peace.

And he will break the pillars of Beth-shemesh, which is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of Egypt he will burn with fire.
