Jeremiah28

Hananiah’s False Prophecy

And it was in that year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananiah son of Azzur the prophet, who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of the LORD, before the eyes of the priests and all the people, saying:

Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.

Within two years of days I am bringing back to this place all the vessels of the house of the LORD that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and brought to Babylon.

And Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exile of Judah who came to Babylon I am bringing back to this place — the utterance of the LORD — for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.

And Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, before the eyes of the priests and before the eyes of all the people standing in the house of the LORD —

and Jeremiah the prophet said: Amen! So may the LORD do. May the LORD raise up your words that you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the house of the LORD and all the exile from Babylon to this place.

Only hear now this word that I am speaking in your ears and in the ears of all the people.

The prophets who were before me and before you from of old prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms, of war and of evil and of pestilence.

The prophet who prophesies for peace — when the word of the prophet comes, then the prophet will be known, that the LORD truly sent him.

And Hananiah the prophet took the yoke bar from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it.

And Hananiah said before the eyes of all the people, saying: Thus says the LORD: So will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon within two years of days from off the neck of all the nations. And Jeremiah the prophet went his way.

And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke bar from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying:

Go and say to Hananiah, saying: Thus says the LORD: Yoke bars of wood you have broken, and you have made in their place yoke bars of iron.

For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: A yoke of iron I have put on the neck of all these nations, to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they will serve him. And even the beast of the field I have given him.

And Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet: Hear now, Hananiah — the LORD did not send you, and you have made this people trust in falsehood.

Therefore thus says the LORD: See, I am sending you off from the face of the ground. This year you will die, for you have spoken rebellion against the LORD.

And Hananiah the prophet died in that year, in the seventh month.
