Thus says the LORD: Go and buy a potter’s earthenware flask, and take some of the elders of the people and of the elders of the priests,
and go out to the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is at the entrance of the Potsherd Gate, and call there the words that I speak to you.
And say: Hear the word of the LORD, kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: See, I am bringing evil on this place, at which the ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.
Because they have forsaken me and estranged this place and burned incense in it to other gods that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known; and they have filled this place with the blood of innocents.
And they built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal — which I did not command and did not speak, and it did not come up on my heart.
Therefore, see, days are coming — the utterance of the LORD — when this place will no longer be called Topheth and the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of the Slaughter.
And I will empty out the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hand of those who seek their soul; and I will give their carcasses as food for the birds of the heavens and for the beasts of the earth.
And I will make this city a horror and a hissing; everyone passing by her will be appalled and will hiss at all her blows.
And I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and each will eat the flesh of his neighbor, in the siege and in the distress with which their enemies and those who seek their soul press them.
And you will break the flask before the eyes of the men who go with you,
and you will say to them: Thus says the LORD of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel that can no longer be mended; and in Topheth they will bury for lack of a place to bury.
So will I do to this place — the utterance of the LORD — and to its inhabitants, making this city like Topheth.
And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be like the place of Topheth, the unclean ones — all the houses on whose roofs they burned incense to all the host of the heavens and poured out drink offerings to other gods.
And Jeremiah came from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the court of the house of the LORD and said to all the people:
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: See, I am bringing on this city and on all her towns all the evil I spoke against her, for they have stiffened their neck so as not to hear my words.
