Jeremiah16

Disaster Predicted

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying:

You shall not take for yourself a wife, and you shall not have sons and daughters in this place.

For thus says the LORD concerning the sons and concerning the daughters born in this place, and concerning their mothers who bear them, and concerning their fathers who beget them in this land:

Deaths of sicknesses they will die; they will not be lamented and they will not be buried; they will be dung on the face of the ground. And by the sword and by famine they will be finished, and their carcasses will be food for the birds of the heavens and for the beasts of the earth.

For thus says the LORD: Do not go into the house of mourning, and do not go to lament, and do not grieve for them; for I have gathered in my peace from this people — the utterance of the LORD — the loyal love and the compassion.

And great and small will die in this land; they will not be buried, and none will lament for them, and none will cut himself and none will make himself bald for them.

And they will not break bread for them in mourning, to comfort him for the dead; and they will not give them the cup of comfort to drink for his father and for his mother.

And a house of feasting you shall not go into, to sit with them to eat and to drink.

For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: See, I am making cease from this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.

And it will be, when you tell this people all these words and they say to you: For what has the LORD spoken against us all this great evil? And what is our iniquity, and what is our sin that we have sinned against the LORD our God? —

then you will say to them: Because your fathers forsook me — the utterance of the LORD — and went after other gods and served them and bowed down to them; and me they forsook, and my instruction they did not keep.

And you have done more evil than your fathers; and see, you walk each after the stubbornness of his evil heart, so as not to listen to me.

And I will hurl you off this land onto a land you have not known, you and your fathers; and there you will serve other gods day and night, where I will give you no favor.

God Will Restore Israel

Therefore, see, days are coming — the utterance of the LORD — when it will no longer be said, As the LORD lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt,

but, As the LORD lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the land of the north and from all the lands where he had driven them. And I will bring them back onto their ground that I gave to their fathers.

See, I am sending for many fishers — the utterance of the LORD — and they will fish them; and after that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them from every mountain and from every hill and from the clefts of the rocks.

For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from before my face, and their iniquity is not concealed from before my eyes.

And I will repay first the double of their iniquity and their sin, because they profaned my land with the carcasses of their detestable things, and with their abominations they filled my inheritance.

LORD, my strength and my stronghold and my refuge in the day of distress, to you nations will come from the ends of the earth and say: Only falsehood our fathers inherited, breath, and there is no profit in them.

Can a man make gods for himself? And they are no gods!

Therefore, see, I am making them know — this time I will make them know my hand and my might; and they will know that my name is the LORD.
