James4

A Warning against Pride

From where come wars and from where quarrels among you? Is it not from here — from your pleasures warring in your members?

You desire and do not have; you murder and covet and are not able to obtain; you quarrel and wage war. You do not have because you do not ask.

You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.

Adulteresses! Do you not know that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore chooses to be a friend of the world is appointed an enemy of God.

Or do you think that the Scripture speaks in vain? He yearns jealously for the spirit that he settled in us.

But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Drawing Near to God

Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, double-minded.

Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

Be humbled before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Do not speak against one another, brothers. The one speaking against a brother or judging his brother speaks against the law and judges the law; and if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

There is one Lawgiver and Judge, the one able to save and to destroy. But who are you, judging your neighbor?

Do Not Boast about Tomorrow

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city and will spend a year there and will trade and will make a profit” —

you who do not know what tomorrow will be. What is your life? For you are a vapor, appearing for a little while and then vanishing.

Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live and do this or that.”

But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

Therefore to him knowing to do good and not doing it, to him it is sin.
