Isaiah6

Isaiah’s Commission

In the year of the death of King Uzziah I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the hems of his robe filling the temple.

Seraphim were standing above him — six wings, six wings to each. With two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

And this one called to that one and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the fullness of all the earth is his glory.”

And the pivots of the thresholds shook at the voice of the one calling, and the house was filled with smoke.

And I said: “Woe to me, for I am undone — for I am a man of unclean lips, and among a people of unclean lips I dwell; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”

And one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand a glowing stone that he had taken with tongs from upon the altar.

And he touched it to my mouth and said: “See, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away, and your sin is atoned for.”

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said: “Here I am — send me.”

And he said: Go and say to this people, “Hear indeed, but do not understand; and see indeed, but do not know.”

Make the heart of this people fat, and make its ears heavy, and smear over its eyes — lest it see with its eyes and hear with its ears, and its heart understand, and it turn back and be healed.

And I said: “How long, Lord?” And he said: Until the cities lie waste with none dwelling in them, and the houses with no man, and the ground lies waste, a desolation;

and the LORD has removed humankind far away, and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.

And if a tenth is still in it, it will again be for burning — like a terebinth and like an oak, which in felling have a stump in them. A holy seed is its stump.
