Isaiah49

The Servant and Light to the Gentiles

Listen, coastlands, to me; and pay attention, peoples from far off. The LORD called me from the womb; from the belly of my mother he brought my name to mind.

And he made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me. And he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he concealed me.

And he said to me, You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will show my beauty.

And I myself said, For nothing I have labored; for emptiness and breath I have spent my strength. Surely my justice is with the LORD, and my recompense with my God.

And now the LORD says — the one who formed me from the womb to be a servant to him, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him; and I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, and my God has become my strength —

and he said: It is too light a thing for you to be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel. And I will make you a light of nations, to be my salvation to the end of the earth.

Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to one despised of soul, to one abhorred by a nation, to a servant of rulers: Kings will see and rise, princes and they will bow down — because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, and he has chosen you.

Thus says the LORD: In a time of favor I answered you, and in a day of salvation I helped you. And I will keep you and make you a covenant of a people, to raise up the land, to give as an inheritance the desolate inheritances,

saying to the prisoners, Go out! and to those in darkness, Show yourselves! Along the roads they will graze, and on all the bare heights will be their pasture.

They will not hunger and they will not thirst, and scorching heat and sun will not strike them; for the one who has compassion on them will lead them, and by springs of water he will guide them.

And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways will be raised up.

See, these come from far off; and see, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Sinim.

Sing, heavens, and rejoice, earth! Break out, mountains, in singing! For the LORD has comforted his people, and on his afflicted he has compassion.

But Zion said, The LORD has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me.

Can a woman forget her nursing child, from having compassion on the son of her belly? Even these may forget, but I myself will not forget you.

See, on my palms I have engraved you; your walls are before me continually.

Your sons hurry back; those who tore you down and laid you waste go out from you.

Lift up your eyes all around and see: all of them gather, they come to you. As I live — the utterance of the LORD — you will surely put them all on like an ornament, and bind them on like a bride.

For your ruins and your desolations and your demolished land — surely now you will be too narrow for the inhabitants, and those who swallowed you up will be far away.

Again the sons of your bereavement will say in your ears: The place is too tight for me; make room for me, and let me dwell.

And you will say in your heart: Who bore these for me, when I was bereaved and barren, exiled and turned away? And these — who raised them? See, I was left alone; these — where were they?

Thus says the Lord GOD: See, I will lift my hand to the nations, and to the peoples I will raise my signal; and they will bring your sons in the bosom, and your daughters will be carried on the shoulder.

And kings will be your foster fathers, and their princesses your nursing mothers. With faces to the earth they will bow down to you, and the dust of your feet they will lick. And you will know that I am the LORD, and that those who wait for me will not be ashamed.

Can plunder be taken from a mighty man, or the captive of a righteous one be rescued?

For thus says the LORD: Even the captive of a mighty man will be taken, and the plunder of a ruthless one will be rescued. And with the one who contends with you I myself will contend, and your sons I myself will save.

And I will feed your oppressors their own flesh, and with their own blood, as with new wine, they will be drunk. And all flesh will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior, and your Redeemer is the Mighty One of Jacob.
