Isaiah38

Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery

In those days Hezekiah fell sick to the point of death. And Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet came to him and said to him: Thus says the LORD: Give orders to your house, for you are dying and will not live.

And Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,

and said: Please, LORD, remember how I have walked before you in truth and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your eyes. And Hezekiah wept a great weeping.

And the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying:

Go and say to Hezekiah, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tear. See, I am adding fifteen years to your days.

And from the palm of the king of Assyria I will deliver you and this city; and I will shield this city.

And this will be the sign for you from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that he has spoken:

See, I am turning back the shadow of the steps, which has gone down on the steps of Ahaz with the sun, backward ten steps. And the sun turned back ten steps, on the steps it had gone down.

Hezekiah’s Song of Thanksgiving

A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick and lived through his sickness:

I myself said, In the stillness of my days I must go into the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the rest of my years.

I said, I shall not see Yah — Yah in the land of the living; I shall not look on a human any more among the inhabitants of the world of the ceasing.

My dwelling has been pulled up and rolled away from me like a shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver; he cuts me off from the thrum. From day until night you make an end of me.

I have set myself calm until morning; like a lion, so he breaks all my bones. From day until night you make an end of me.

Like a swift, a swallow, so I chirp; I moan like a dove. My eyes are worn out looking to the height. Lord, I am oppressed — be my surety!

What shall I speak? He has both said it to me and himself done it. I will walk slowly all my years, over the bitterness of my soul.

Lord, by these things people live, and in all of them is the life of my spirit. So restore me, and let me live.

See, it was for my well-being that I had bitterness, bitterness; and you — you have loved my soul out of the pit of nothingness, for you have cast all my sins behind your back.

For Sheol does not give you thanks, death does not praise you; those who go down to the pit do not hope for your faithfulness.

The living, the living — he gives you thanks, as I do this day. A father to sons makes known your faithfulness.

The LORD is here to save me — and we will play my stringed music all the days of our lives at the house of the LORD.

And Isaiah said: Let them take a cake of figs and rub it on the boil, and let him live.

And Hezekiah said: What is the sign that I will go up to the house of the LORD?
