I Thessalonians4

Living to Please God

Finally then, brothers, we encourage you and urge you in the Lord Jesus that, just as you received from us how it behooves you to walk and to please God — just as you also walk — so you may abound more.

For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality,

that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,

not in the passion of lust, as also the Gentiles who do not know God;

that no one go beyond and overreach his brother in the matter, because the Lord is an avenger concerning all these things, just as we also told you before and thoroughly warned.

For God did not call us to impurity but in sanctification.

So then, the one who rejects this rejects not man but God, who also gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for me to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another;

for indeed you are doing this toward all the brothers in all Macedonia. But we encourage you, brothers, to abound more,

and to strive earnestly to live quietly and to attend to your own affairs and to work with your own hands, just as we commanded you,

so that you may walk properly toward those outside and may have need of nothing.

The Return of the Lord

But we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who are falling asleep, so that you may not be grieved as also the rest who have no hope.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so also God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus.

For this we declare to you in the word of the Lord, that we the living, who remain until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.

Because the Lord himself, with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

Then we the living, who remain, will be caught away together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will always be with the Lord.

Therefore encourage one another with these words.
