I Samuel2

Hannah’s Prayer of Thanksgiving

And Hannah prayed and said: “My heart exults in the LORD; my horn is raised high in the LORD. My mouth is opened wide against my enemies, for I rejoice in your salvation.

There is none holy like the LORD — for there is none besides you; and there is no rock like our God.

Do not multiply speaking so high, so high; let arrogance go out of your mouth no more. For the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him deeds are weighed.

The bows of the mighty are shattered, and those who stumbled are girded with strength.

The full have hired themselves out for bread, and the hungry have ceased to hunger. Even the barren has borne seven, and she who had many sons has withered.

The LORD puts to death and makes alive; he brings down to Sheol and brings up.

The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low — he also lifts high.

He raises the poor from the dust; from the ash heap he lifts the needy, to seat them with nobles and give them a throne of glory as inheritance. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and he has set the world on them.

The feet of his loyal ones he keeps, but the wicked are silenced in darkness — for not by strength does a man prevail.

The LORD — those who contend with him are shattered; against them he thunders in the heavens. The LORD judges the ends of the earth. And may he give strength to his king, and raise high the horn of his anointed.”

And Elkanah went to Ramah, to his house; and the boy was ministering to the LORD before Eli the priest.

Eli’s Wicked Sons

Now the sons of Eli were worthless men; they did not know the LORD.

And the custom of the priests with the people was this: whenever any man sacrificed a sacrifice, the priest’s young man would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand,

and he would strike it into the basin, or the kettle, or the cauldron, or the pot; all that the fork brought up, the priest would take with it. So they did to all Israel who came there, at Shiloh.

Even before they burned the fat, the priest’s young man would come and say to the man sacrificing, “Give meat for roasting for the priest — for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw.”

And if the man said to him, “Let them surely burn the fat first, and then take for yourself whatever your soul desires,” then he would say, “No — give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.”

And the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD, for the men despised the offering of the LORD.

But Samuel was ministering before the LORD — a boy girded with a linen ephod.

And his mother would make him a little robe and bring it up to him year by year, when she went up with her husband to sacrifice the sacrifice of the days.

And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife and say, “May the LORD set for you seed from this woman in place of the one asked, who was lent to the LORD.” And they would go to their own place.

Indeed the LORD visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew up with the LORD.

Now Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who served at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

And he said to them: “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all this people.

No, my sons — for it is not a good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading.

If a man sins against a man, God may mediate for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?” But they did not listen to the voice of their father — for the LORD desired to put them to death.

And the boy Samuel went on growing, and was good both with the LORD and with men.

A Prophecy against the House of Eli

And a man of God came to Eli and said to him: “Thus says the LORD: Did I not reveal myself, reveal myself indeed, to the house of your father when they were in Egypt, belonging to the house of Pharaoh?

And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up on my altar, to burn incense, to carry an ephod before me; and I gave to the house of your father all the fire offerings of the sons of Israel.

Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I commanded in my dwelling? And you honor your sons above me, fattening yourselves on the first part of every offering of Israel my people.

Therefore — the declaration of the LORD, the God of Israel — I said, I surely said, that your house and the house of your father would walk before me forever. But now — the declaration of the LORD — far be it from me! For those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be held in contempt.

Look — days are coming when I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, so that there will be no old man in your house.

And you will look on distress in my dwelling, in all the good that is done to Israel; and there will never be an old man in your house, all the days.

And the man of yours I do not cut off from my altar will be left to wear out your eyes and to grieve your soul; and all the increase of your house shall die as men.

And this shall be the sign for you, which will come to your two sons, to Hophni and Phinehas: on one day the two of them shall die.

And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and in my soul; and I will build him a faithful house, and he will walk before my anointed all the days.

And it shall be that everyone left in your house will come to bow down to him for a piece of silver and a round of bread, and will say: Attach me, please, to one of the priestly offices, to eat a scrap of bread.”
