And Elijah the Tishbite, of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab: “As the LORD lives, the God of Israel, before whom I stand — there shall be no dew or rain these years, except by the mouth of my word.”
And the word of the LORD came to him, saying:
“Go from here, and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which faces the Jordan.
And it shall be that you will drink from the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.”
And he went and did according to the word of the LORD: he went and stayed by the brook Cherith, which faces the Jordan.
And the ravens were bringing him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he would drink from the brook.
And it was at the end of days that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
The Widow of Zarephath
And the word of the LORD came to him, saying:
“Rise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Look — I have commanded a widow woman there to provide for you.”
And he rose and went to Zarephath, and came to the entrance of the city — and look, a widow woman there, gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Bring me, please, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.”
And she went to bring it; and he called to her and said, “Bring me, please, a piece of bread in your hand.”
And she said: “As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked — only a handful of flour in the jar, and a little oil in the jug. And look — I am gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go in and prepare it for myself and for my son, and we will eat it — and die.”
And Elijah said to her: “Do not fear. Go in, do according to your word. Only make me from it a small cake first, and bring it out to me; and for yourself and for your son make something afterward.
For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: The jar of flour will not be finished, and the jug of oil will not fail, until the day the LORD gives rain on the face of the ground.”
And she went and did according to the word of Elijah; and she ate — she and he, and her household — for days.
The jar of flour was not finished, and the jug of oil did not fail, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by the hand of Elijah.
Elijah Raises the Widow’s Son
And it was, after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so very severe that no breath was left in him.
And she said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, man of God? You have come to me to bring my iniquity to remembrance, and to put my son to death.”
And he said to her, “Give me your son.” And he took him from her bosom and carried him up to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
And he called to the LORD and said, “LORD my God — have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I am staying, to put her son to death?”
And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and called to the LORD and said, “LORD my God — let the life of this child return, please, into his body.”
And the LORD listened to the voice of Elijah; and the life of the child returned into his body, and he lived.
And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother; and Elijah said, “See — your son lives.”
And the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.”
