I Kings14

Ahijah’s Prophecy against Jeroboam

At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick.

And Jeroboam said to his wife: “Rise, please, and disguise yourself, so they will not know that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Look — Ahijah the prophet is there, the one who spoke concerning me, that I would be king over this people.

And take in your hand ten loaves of bread, and cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy.”

And Jeroboam’s wife did so: she rose and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. Now Ahijah was not able to see, for his eyes had grown fixed from his old age.

And the LORD had said to Ahijah: “Look — the wife of Jeroboam is coming to seek a word from you concerning her son, for he is sick. Thus and so you shall speak to her. And it will be, when she comes, that she will be pretending to be another woman.”

And it was, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet coming in at the doorway, that he said: “Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why is it you are pretending to be another? I am sent to you with something hard.

Go, say to Jeroboam: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Because I raised you up from the midst of the people, and made you leader over my people Israel,

and tore the kingdom from the house of David and gave it to you — yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and who walked after me with all his heart, to do only what is upright in my eyes,

but you have done more evil than all who were before you, and have gone and made for yourself other gods and cast images, provoking me, and you have thrown me behind your back —

therefore, look, I am bringing evil on the house of Jeroboam, and I will cut off from Jeroboam every one who urinates against a wall, bound or free in Israel; and I will burn away the house of Jeroboam as one burns away dung, until it is gone.

The one of Jeroboam who dies in the city, the dogs will eat; and the one who dies in the field, the birds of the heavens will eat — for the LORD has spoken.

And you — rise, go to your house. When your feet come into the city, the child will die.

And all Israel will lament for him and bury him — for he alone of Jeroboam will come to a tomb, because in him something good toward the LORD, the God of Israel, was found, in the house of Jeroboam.

And the LORD will raise up for himself a king over Israel, who will cut off the house of Jeroboam — this is the day. And what? — even now.

And the LORD will strike Israel as the reed sways in the water, and he will uproot Israel from this good ground that he gave to their fathers, and scatter them beyond the River — because they made their Asherim, provoking the LORD.

And he will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he sinned and which he caused Israel to sin.”

And Jeroboam’s wife rose and went, and came to Tirzah. She was coming in at the threshold of the house — and the boy died.

And they buried him, and all Israel lamented for him, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet.

Nadab Succeeds Jeroboam

And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam — how he fought, and how he reigned — look, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

And the days that Jeroboam reigned were twenty-two years; and he lay down with his fathers, and Nadab his son became king in his place.

Rehoboam Reigns in Judah

And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to set his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite.

And Judah did the evil in the eyes of the LORD; and they provoked him to jealousy, more than all that their fathers had done, with the sins they sinned.

And they also built for themselves high places, and sacred pillars, and Asherim, on every high hill and under every leafy tree.

And there were also male cult prostitutes in the land. They did according to all the abominations of the nations that the LORD had dispossessed from before the sons of Israel.

Shishak Raids Jerusalem

And it was in the fifth year of King Rehoboam that Shishak, king of Egypt, came up against Jerusalem.

And he took the treasuries of the house of the LORD and the treasuries of the house of the king — he took everything; and he took all the shields of gold that Solomon had made.

And King Rehoboam made shields of bronze in their place, and entrusted them into the hand of the commanders of the runners who guarded the entrance of the house of the king.

And it was, whenever the king came to the house of the LORD, that the runners would carry them, and then return them to the chamber of the runners.

And the rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did — are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days.

And Rehoboam lay down with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite. And Abijam his son became king in his place.
