II Kings1

Elijah Denounces Ahaziah

And Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.

And Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper room that was in Samaria, and became sick; and he sent messengers and said to them, “Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this sickness.”

But the angel of the LORD spoke to Elijah the Tishbite: “Rise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and speak to them: ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?

Now therefore, thus says the LORD: The bed onto which you have gone up — you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die.’” And Elijah went.

And the messengers returned to him, and he said to them, “Why is it you have returned?”

And they said to him: “A man came up to meet us and said to us: ‘Go, return to the king who sent you, and speak to him: Thus says the LORD: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore the bed onto which you have gone up — you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die.’”

And he spoke to them, “What was the manner of the man who came up to meet you and spoke these words to you?”

And they said to him, “A man, a master of hair, with a belt of leather girded on his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”

And he sent to him a commander of fifty with his fifty; and he went up to him — and look, he was sitting on the top of the hill. And he spoke to him, “Man of God, the king has spoken: Come down.”

And Elijah answered and spoke to the commander of the fifty: “And if I am a man of God, let fire come down from the heavens and devour you and your fifty.” And fire came down from the heavens and devoured him and his fifty.

And he sent to him again another commander of fifty with his fifty; and he answered and spoke to him, “Man of God, thus says the king: Quickly — come down.”

And Elijah answered and spoke to them, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the heavens and devour you and your fifty.” And the fire of God came down from the heavens and devoured him and his fifty.

And he sent again a third commander of fifty with his fifty. And the third commander of fifty went up and came and bowed on his knees before Elijah, and pleaded with him and spoke to him: “Man of God — let my life, please, and the life of these your servants, these fifty, be precious in your eyes.

Look — fire has come down from the heavens and devoured the two former commanders of fifty with their fifties. But now, let my life be precious in your eyes.”

And the angel of the LORD spoke to Elijah, “Go down with him. Do not be afraid of him.” And he rose and went down with him to the king.

And he spoke to him: “Thus says the LORD: Because you sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron — is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? — therefore the bed onto which you have gone up: you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die.”

Jehoram Succeeds Ahaziah

And he died, according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram became king in his place, in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah — for he had no son.

And the rest of the acts of Ahaziah that he did — are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
