II Corinthians12

Paul’s Revelation

It behooves me to boast; it is not profitable indeed, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord.

I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago — whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows — such a one caught up to the third heaven.

And I know such a man — whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows —

that he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible declarations, which it is not permitted for a man to speak.

Paul’s Thorn and God’s Grace

Concerning such a one I will boast, but concerning myself I will not boast except in the weaknesses.

For if I should wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will speak the truth; but I refrain, lest anyone credit to me more than what he sees in me or hears anything of me.

and by the surpassing greatness of the revelations. Therefore, so that I might not become conceited, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan, to buffet me, so that I might not become conceited.

Concerning this I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me.

And he has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of the Christ may rest upon me.

Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in insults, in necessities, in persecutions and distresses, for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians

I have become a fool; you compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you, for in nothing was I inferior to those most eminent apostles, even if I am nothing.

The signs of the apostle were indeed performed among you in all endurance, in signs and wonders and works of power.

For in what were you inferior to the rest of the churches, except that I myself did not burden you? Forgive me this wrong!

Behold, this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not burden you; for I do not seek what is yours but you. For the children ought not to treasure up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

And I will most gladly spend and be utterly spent for your souls. If, loving you more abundantly, I am loved less!

But let it be: I did not burden you; but being crafty, I caught you by trickery.

Did I overreach you through any of those whom I have sent to you?

I encouraged Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus overreach you? Did we not walk in the same spirit? Not in the same steps?

You have been thinking all along that we are presenting a defense to you. Before God in Christ we speak; and all things, beloved, are for your building up.

For I fear lest perhaps, having come, I may not find you such as I wish, and I may be found by you such as you do not wish; lest perhaps there be quarrel, jealousy, rage, contentions, slanders, gossip, conceit, disorders;

lest, when I come again, my God may humble me before you, and I may mourn over many of those who have sinned before and have not repented of the impurity and sexual immorality and sensuality that they practiced.
