II Chronicles22

Ahaziah Reigns in Judah

And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah, his youngest son, king in his place — for the raiding band that had come with the Arabians against the camp had killed all the older ones. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, became king.

Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah, the granddaughter of Omri.

He too walked in the ways of the house of Ahab — for his mother was his counselor in acting wickedly.

And he did the evil in the eyes of the LORD, like the house of Ahab — for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his ruin.

He also walked in their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, to war against Hazael, king of Aram, at Ramoth-gilead; and the Arameans struck Joram.

And he returned to be healed at Jezreel, because of the wounds they had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael, king of Aram. And Azariah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab at Jezreel, for he was sick.

And from God came the downfall of Ahaziah, in coming to Joram; for when he came, he went out with Jehoram to Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab.

Jehu Kills the Princes of Judah

And it was, as Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, that he found the officials of Judah and the sons of the brothers of Ahaziah, ministers of Ahaziah; and he killed them.

And he sought Ahaziah; and they captured him — he was hiding in Samaria — and brought him to Jehu, and put him to death. And they buried him, for they said, “He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” And there was no one of the house of Ahaziah able to retain strength for the kingdom.

Athaliah and Joash

And Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead; and she rose and destroyed all the royal seed of the house of Judah.

But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being put to death, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. And Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest — for she was the sister of Ahaziah — hid him from the face of Athaliah, and she did not put him to death.

And he was with them in the house of God, hiding, six years; and Athaliah was reigning over the land.
