Shishak Raids Jerusalem
And it was, when the kingdom of Rehoboam was established, and when he grew strong, that he abandoned the instruction of the LORD — and all Israel with him.
And it was in the fifth year of King Rehoboam that Shishak, king of Egypt, came up against Jerusalem — because they had broken faith with the LORD —
with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen; and there was no number to the people who came with him from Egypt: Libyans, Sukkiim, and Cushites.
And he captured the fortified cities that belonged to Judah, and came as far as Jerusalem.
And Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the officials of Judah, who had gathered to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them: “Thus says the LORD: You have abandoned me — so I also have abandoned you into the hand of Shishak.”
And the officials of Israel and the king humbled themselves, and said, “The LORD is righteous.”
And when the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying: “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them. I will give them some measure of deliverance, and my fury will not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.
But they will become his servants — so that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the lands.”
And Shishak, king of Egypt, came up against Jerusalem; and he took the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the house of the king — he took everything; and he took the shields of gold that Solomon had made.
And King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze, and entrusted them into the hand of the commanders of the runners, who kept the entrance of the house of the king.
And it was, whenever the king came to the house of the LORD, the runners came and carried them, and returned them to the chamber of the runners.
And when he humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned back from him, so as not to destroy completely — and also in Judah there were good things.
Rehoboam’s Reign and Death
And King Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned. For Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem — the city that the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to set his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite.
And he did the evil — for he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.
And the acts of Rehoboam, the first and the last — are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer, in the manner of genealogy? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days.
And Rehoboam lay down with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David; and Abijah his son became king in his place.
