Hosea9

Israel’s Punishment

Do not rejoice, Israel, to exultation like the peoples; for you have whored away from your God. You have loved a fee on every threshing floor of grain.

Threshing floor and winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will fail her.

They will not dwell in the land of the LORD; and Ephraim will return to Egypt, and in Assyria they will eat unclean food.

They will not pour wine to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not be pleasing to him. Like the bread of mourners it is to them; all who eat it will be defiled — for their bread is for their soul; it will not come into the house of the LORD.

What will you do for the day of the appointed time, and for the day of the festival of the LORD?

For look, they have gone from devastation; Egypt will gather them, Memphis will bury them. The desirable things of their silver — nettles will possess them; thorns will be in their tents.

The days of visitation have come; the days of recompense have come. Israel will know it. The prophet is a fool, the man of the spirit is mad, because of the abundance of your iniquity and great hostility.

Ephraim is a watchman with my God; a prophet — a fowler’s snare on all his ways, hostility in the house of his God.

They have gone deep, they have corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity; he will attend to their sins.

Like grapes in the wilderness I found Israel; like the first fruit on a fig tree in its beginning I saw your fathers. They came to Baal-peor and dedicated themselves to shame, and they became detestable things, like the thing they loved.

Ephraim — like a bird their glory will fly away, from birth and from womb and from conception.

For even if they raise their sons, I will bereave them of every man; for woe also to them when I turn away from them!

Ephraim, as I saw Tyre, is planted in a meadow; and Ephraim is to bring out his sons to the killer.

Give them, LORD — what will you give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

All their evil is in Gilgal, for there I hated them. For the evil of their deeds I will drive them out of my house; I will no longer love them. All their officials are stubborn.

Ephraim is struck; their root is dried up; they will bear no fruit. Even if they give birth, I will kill the desirable ones of their womb.

My God will reject them, because they did not listen to him; and they will become wanderers among the nations.
