The Death and Burial of Sarah
And the life of Sarah was a hundred and twenty-seven years — the years of the life of Sarah.
And Sarah died in Kiriath-arba — that is, Hebron — in the land of Canaan. And Abraham came to lament for Sarah and to weep for her.
And Abraham rose up from before his dead and spoke to the sons of Heth:
“I am a sojourner and a settler among you. Give me a burial holding among you, so that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,
“Hear us, my lord. You are a prince of God in our midst. In the choicest of our tombs bury your dead; not one of us will withhold his tomb from you for burying your dead.”
And Abraham rose and bowed to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth,
and he spoke with them: “If it is your will that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and appeal for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,
that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which is his, which is at the end of his field. For the full price let him give it to me in your midst, as a burial holding.”
Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth. And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth, of all who came in at the gate of his city:
“No, my lord — hear me. The field I give you, and the cave that is in it, I give you. Before the eyes of the sons of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.”
And Abraham bowed before the people of the land,
and he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land: “But if you would only hear me — I give the price of the field. Take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.”
And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
“My lord, hear me: land worth four hundred shekels of silver — between me and you, what is that? Bury your dead.”
And Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth — four hundred shekels of silver, current with the merchant.
So the field of Ephron in Machpelah, which faces Mamre — the field and the cave in it, and every tree in the field, within its whole border around — was made over
to Abraham as a purchase, before the eyes of the sons of Heth, before all who came in at the gate of his city.
And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre — that is, Hebron — in the land of Canaan.
And the field, and the cave in it, was made over to Abraham as a burial holding, from the sons of Heth.
