And Abraham journeyed from there to the land of the Negev, and lived between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar.
And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
And God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night and said to him, “Look, you are a dead man because of the woman you have taken — for she is a married woman.”
Now Abimelech had not come near her. And he said, “Lord, will you kill a nation even though righteous?
Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she — she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the wholeness of my heart and the cleanness of my hands I have done this.”
And God said to him in the dream, “I also know that in the wholeness of your heart you have done this, and I also held you back from sinning against me; therefore I did not let you touch her.
And now, return the man’s wife — for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”
And Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants, and spoke all these words in their ears; and the men were very afraid.
And Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? Deeds that are not done, you have done with me.”
And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you did this thing?”
And Abraham said, “Because I said, ‘Surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me over the matter of my wife.’
And besides, she truly is my sister — the daughter of my father, though not the daughter of my mother — and she became my wife.
And when God made me wander from my father’s house, I said to her, ‘This is the loyal love you shall do for me: at every place we come to, say of me, He is my brother.’”
And Abimelech took sheep and cattle, and male servants and female servants, and gave them to Abraham; and he returned Sarah his wife to him.
And Abimelech said, “Look, my land is before you; live wherever it is good in your eyes.”
And to Sarah he said, “Look, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. Look, it is a covering of the eyes for you, before all who are with you — and before everyone you are cleared.”
And Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his female servants, and they bore children —
for the LORD had completely shut up every womb of the house of Abimelech over the matter of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
