“Speak to the sons of Israel, that they turn back and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal-zephon; opposite it you shall camp, by the sea.
And Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, ‘They are wandering confused in the land — the wilderness has shut them in.’
And I will make Pharaoh’s heart strong, and he will chase after them; and I will gain glory through Pharaoh and through all his army — and Egypt shall know that I am the LORD.” And they did so.
And it was told to the king of Egypt that the people had fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and his servants was turned against the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”
And he harnessed his chariot, and took his people with him.
And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them.
And the LORD made strong the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he chased after the sons of Israel — and the sons of Israel were going out with a high hand.
And Egypt chased after them — every horse and chariot of Pharaoh, and his horsemen and his army — and overtook them camped by the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon.
And Pharaoh drew near. And the sons of Israel lifted their eyes, and look — Egypt marching after them. And they were very afraid, and the sons of Israel cried out to the LORD.
And they said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you took us to die in the wilderness? What is this you have done to us, bringing us out of Egypt?
Is this not the word we spoke to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone, and let us serve Egypt’? For it would have been better for us to serve Egypt than to die in the wilderness.”
And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today — for the Egypt you see today, you will never see again, forever.
The LORD will fight for you — and you shall be still.”
Parting the Red Sea
And the LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Speak to the sons of Israel, that they set out.
And you — lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea, and split it; and the sons of Israel shall go into the midst of the sea on dry ground.
And I — look, I am going to make the heart of Egypt strong, and they will come in after them; and I will gain glory through Pharaoh and through all his army, through his chariots and through his horsemen.
And Egypt shall know that I am the LORD, when I gain glory through Pharaoh, through his chariots and through his horsemen.”
And the angel of God, who was going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them.
And it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness — and it lit up the night; and the one did not come near the other all night.
And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. And the LORD drove the sea back with a fierce east wind all night, and made the sea into dry land — and the waters were split.
And the sons of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, and the waters were a wall for them on their right and on their left.
And Egypt chased and came in after them — every horse of Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen — into the midst of the sea.
And it happened, in the morning watch, that the LORD looked down on the camp of Egypt in the pillar of fire and cloud — and he threw the camp of Egypt into confusion.
And he bound the wheels of their chariots, so that they drove heavily. And Egypt said, “Let me flee from before Israel — for the LORD is fighting for them against Egypt!”
And the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, and let the waters return on Egypt, on its chariots and on its horsemen.”
And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and toward morning the sea returned to its steady flow, with Egypt fleeing into it — and the LORD shook Egypt off into the midst of the sea.
And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen — all the army of Pharaoh that had come in after them into the sea. Not even one of them was left.
But the sons of Israel walked on dry ground through the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall for them on their right and on their left.
And the LORD saved Israel that day from the hand of Egypt; and Israel saw Egypt dead on the shore of the sea.
And Israel saw the great hand that the LORD had worked against Egypt, and the people feared the LORD; and they believed in the LORD and in Moses his servant.
