The Defeat of Og
And we turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og king of Bashan came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei.
And the LORD said to me, “Do not fear him, for into your hand I have given him, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorite, who lived in Heshbon.”
And the LORD our God gave into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people; and we struck him down until no survivor was left to him.
And we captured all his cities at that time; there was no town that we did not take from them — sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars — besides very many unwalled villages.
And we devoted them to destruction, as we did to Sihon king of Heshbon — devoting to destruction every city: men, the women, and the little ones.
But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we plundered for ourselves.
And we took at that time the land out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorite who were across the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon
(Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorite calls it Senir) —
all the cities of the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
(For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Look — his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the sons of Ammon? Nine cubits its length and four cubits its width, by the cubit of a man.)
Land Division East of the Jordan
And this land we took possession of at that time: from Aroer, which is by the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities, I gave to the Reubenite and to the Gadite.
And the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh — all the region of Argob, with all Bashan. (That is called the land of Rephaim.
Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, as far as the border of the Geshurite and the Maacathite; and he called them — Bashan — by his own name, Havvoth-jair, to this day.)
And to Machir I gave Gilead.
And to the Reubenite and to the Gadite I gave from Gilead as far as the Valley of the Arnon, the middle of the valley as a border, and as far as the Jabbok, the valley that is the border of the sons of Ammon,
and the Arabah, with the Jordan as a border, from Chinnereth as far as the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah, eastward.
And I commanded you at that time, saying, “The LORD your God has given you this land to possess it. Armed you shall cross over before your brothers, the sons of Israel — all the sons of valor.
Only your wives, and your little ones, and your livestock — I know that you have much livestock — shall stay in your cities that I have given you,
until the LORD gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they too take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then you shall return, each man to his possession that I have given you.”
And Joshua I commanded at that time, saying, “Your own eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. So shall the LORD do to all the kingdoms into which you are crossing.
You shall not fear them, for the LORD your God — he is the one who fights for you.”
Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan
And I pleaded for favor with the LORD at that time, saying,
“My Lord GOD, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your strong hand — for what god is there in the heavens or on the earth who can do according to your works and according to your mighty acts?
Please let me cross over and see the good land that is across the Jordan — this good hill country, and Lebanon.”
But the LORD was furious with me on your account, and did not listen to me. And the LORD said to me, “Enough for you! Do not speak to me anymore of this matter.
Go up to the top of Pisgah, and lift up your eyes westward and northward and southward and eastward, and see with your eyes — for you shall not cross this Jordan.
And command Joshua, and strengthen him and make him bold; for he shall cross over before this people, and he shall give them as an inheritance the land that you will see.”
And we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
