Daniel’s Vision of the Four Beasts

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head upon his bed. Then he wrote the dream; he told the sum of the words.

Daniel answered and said: I was looking in my vision with the night, and see, the four winds of the heavens were stirring up the great sea.

And four great beasts came up from the sea, each different from the other.

The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I was looking until its wings were plucked, and it was lifted from the earth and made to stand on two feet like a man; and the heart of a man was given to it.

And see, another beast, a second, like a bear; and it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth. And they said thus to it: Arise, devour much flesh.

After this I was looking, and see, another, like a leopard; and it had four wings of a bird on its back, and the beast had four heads; and dominion was given to it.

After this I was looking in the visions of the night, and see, a fourth beast, fearful and terrible and exceedingly strong; and it had great teeth of iron. It devoured and broke in pieces and trampled the rest with its feet; and it was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns.

I was observing the horns, and see, another horn, a little one, came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted from before it. And see, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Daniel’s Vision of the Ancient of Days

I was looking until thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days sat. His garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was flames of fire, its wheels burning fire.

A river of fire was flowing and coming out from before him. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The judgment sat, and the books were opened.

I was looking then, because of the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking. I was looking until the beast was killed and its body destroyed and given to the burning of fire.

And the rest of the beasts — their dominion was taken away, and a lengthening in life was given to them for a season and a time.

Daniel’s Vision of the Son of Man

I was looking in the visions of the night, and see, with the clouds of the heavens one like a son of man was coming; and he came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought him near before him.

And to him was given dominion and honor and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations and tongues should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which will not pass away, and his kingdom one that will not be ruined.

Daniel’s Visions Interpreted

My spirit, mine, Daniel, was distressed within its sheath, and the visions of my head alarmed me.

I came near to one of those standing there and asked him what was certain about all this. And he told me, and made known to me the interpretation of the words:

These great beasts, which are four — four kings will arise from the earth.

And the holy ones of the Most High will receive the kingdom, and they will possess the kingdom forever, and forever and ever.

Then I desired to make certain about the fourth beast, which was different from all of them: exceedingly fearful, its teeth of iron and its claws of bronze, devouring, breaking in pieces and trampling the rest with its feet;

and about the ten horns that were on its head, and the other that came up, and before which three fell — that horn which had eyes, and a mouth speaking great things, and whose appearance was greater than its companions.

I was looking, and that horn made war with the holy ones and prevailed against them,

until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given to the holy ones of the Most High, and the time came and the holy ones possessed the kingdom.

Thus he said: The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the kingdoms; and it will devour all the earth and tread it down and break it in pieces.

And the ten horns: from that kingdom ten kings will arise, and another will arise after them; and he will be different from the first ones, and he will bring low three kings.

And he will speak words against the Most High, and he will wear out the holy ones of the Most High, and he will intend to change times and law; and they will be given into his hand for a time and times and half a time.

And the judgment will sit, and they will take away his dominion, to annihilate and to destroy it to the end.

And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under all the heavens will be given to the people of the holy ones of the Most High. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey him.

Thus far is the end of the word. As for me, Daniel — my thoughts greatly alarmed me, and my brightness was changed on me; and I kept the word in my heart.
