Acts10

Cornelius Sends for Peter

Now a certain man in Caesarea named Cornelius was a centurion of the Cohort which is called Italian,

devout and fearing God with all his household, doing many alms to the people and praying to God through all times.

He saw in a vision clearly, as if about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God having come to him and having said to him, “Cornelius!”

And having looked intently on him and having become afraid, he said, “What is it, Lord?” He said then to him, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.

And now send men to Joppa and summon someone, Simon, who is called Peter;

he lodges with a certain Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”

Then when the angel who is speaking to him had departed, having called two of the servants and a devout soldier of those attending to him,

and having related all things to them, he sent them to Joppa.

Peter’s Vision

Now on the next day, when these are journeying and are approaching to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.

He became then hungry and was desiring to eat; but when some of them were preparing, a trance happened upon him,

and he beholds the heaven opened and a certain vessel descending, as a great sheet being let down by four corners upon the earth,

in which were all the quadrupeds and creeping things of the earth and birds of heaven.

And there came a voice to him: “Having risen up, Peter, kill and eat.”

And Peter said, “In no way, Lord; for never did I eat anything common or unclean.”

And a voice came again for the second time to him: “What God has cleansed, you yourself do not call common.”

Now this took place for three times, and immediately the vessel was taken up into the heaven.

Peter Called to Caesarea

Then while Peter was perplexed in himself what the vision that he had seen would be, behold, the men who sent from Cornelius, having inquired for the house of Simon, stood at the gate;

and having called out, they were asking if Simon who is being called Peter is lodged here.

And Peter thinking over the vision, the Spirit said to him: “Behold, three men are seeking you;

but having risen, go down and proceed with them, doubting nothing, since I myself have sent them.”

Having gone down then, Peter to the men, he said, “Behold, I myself am whom you seek; what is the cause for which you are here?”

And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man and fearing God, being well testified to by all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to send for you to his house and to hear a declaration from you.”

Having called them in therefore, he lodged them. Now on the next day, having risen up, he went forth with them, and some of the brothers, those from Joppa, went with him.

Peter Visits Cornelius

Now on the next day he entered into Caesarea; and Cornelius was expecting them, having called together his relatives and close friends.

Then as it was the entering of Peter, Cornelius, having met with him, having fallen at the feet, worshiped him.

But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Rise up; I myself also am a man myself.”

And talking with him, he entered and finds many having gathered together,

and he was saying to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to unite himself or to come near to someone foreign. And to me God has shown to call no man common or unclean;

therefore also without objection I came, having been summoned. I inquire therefore, for what reason did you summon me?”

And Cornelius was saying, “Four days ago until this hour I was praying at the ninth in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel

and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms was remembered before God.

Send therefore to Joppa and call for Simon who is called Peter; he lodges in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.’

At once therefore I sent to you, and you yourself did well, having come. Now therefore we ourselves all are present before God to hear all the things commanded you by the Lord.”

Good News for the Gentiles

Having opened the mouth then, Peter said, “Of a truth I grasped that God is not One who shows partiality,

but in every nation the one who is fearing Him and working righteousness is acceptable to Him.

The word that He sent to the sons of Israel, evangelising about peace through Jesus Christ — He is Lord of all —

you yourselves know the declaration having come through all Judea, having begun from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed:

Jesus, the one from Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all those being oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.

And we ourselves are witnesses of all things that He did both in the region of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom also they executed, having hanged Him on a tree.

This One God raised up on the third day and gave Him to become revealed,

not revealed to all the people, but to the witnesses who chosen beforehand by God — to us, who ate with and drank with Him after the rising of Him out from the dead.

And He instructed us to proclaim to the people and to testify fully that He is the One appointed by God as judge of living and dead.

To Him all the prophets bear witness, that forgiveness of sins receiving through His name everyone who is believing in Him.”

The Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit

Still when Peter is speaking these declarations, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those hearing the word.

And the believers from the circumcision were amazed, as many as had come with Peter, that even upon the Gentiles the gift of the Holy Spirit has been poured out;

for they were hearing when they are speaking in tongues and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,

“Surely no one is able to withhold the water not to baptize these, who have received the Holy Spirit as also we ourselves have?”

He commanded them then to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain some days.
