And Davidfledfrom Naiothin Ramah, and cameand saidbeforeJonathan,What have I done?what is mine iniquity?and what is my sinbeforethy father, that he seekethmy life?
And he saidunto him, God forbid;thou shalt not die:behold, my fatherwill donothingeither greator small, but that he will shewit me: and why should my fatherhidethis thingfrom me? it is not so.
And Davidswaremoreover, and said,Thy fathercertainlyknoweththat I have foundgracein thine eyes;and he saith,Let not Jonathanknowthis, lest he be grieved:but trulyas the LORDliveth, and as thy soulliveth, there is but a stepbetween me and death.
Then saidJonathanunto David,Whatsoever thy souldesireth,I will even doit for thee.
And Davidsaidunto Jonathan,Behold, to morrowis the new moon, and I should not failto sitwith the kingat meat:but let me go,that I may hidemyself in the fieldunto the thirdday at even.
If thy fatherat allmissme, then say,Davidearnestlyaskedleave of me that he might runto Bethlehemhis city:for there is a yearlysacrificethere for all the family.
If he saythus, It is well;thy servantshall have peace:but if he be verywroth, then be surethat evilis determinedby him.
Therefore thou shalt dealkindlywith thy servant;for thou hast broughtthy servantinto a covenantof the LORDwith thee: notwithstanding, if there bein me iniquity, slayme thyself; for why shouldest thou bringme to thy father?
And Jonathansaid,Far be it from thee:for if I knewcertainlythat evilwere determinedby my fatherto comeupon thee, then would not I tellit thee?
Then saidDavidto Jonathan,Who shall tellme? or what if thy fatheranswerthee roughly?
And Jonathansaidunto David,Come, and let us go outinto the field. And they went outbothof them into the field.
And Jonathansaidunto David,O LORDGodof Israel,when I have soundedmy fatherabout to morrowany time,or the thirdday, and, behold, if there be goodtoward David,and I then sendnot unto thee, and shewit thee;
The LORDdosoand much moreto Jonathan:but if it pleasemy fatherto do thee evil, then I will shewit thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest goin peace:and the LORDbe with thee, as he hath been with my father.
And thou shalt not only while yetI liveshewme the kindnessof the LORD,that I dienot:
But also thou shalt not cut offthy kindnessfrom my houseforever:no, not when the LORDhath cut offthe enemiesof Davidevery onefrom the faceof the earth.
So Jonathanmadea covenant with the houseof David, saying, Let the LORDeven requireit at the handof David'senemies.
And Jonathancaused Davidto swearagain, because he lovedhim: for he lovedhim as he lovedhis own soul.
Then Jonathansaidto David,To morrowis the new moon:and thou shalt be missed, because thy seatwill be empty.
And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go downquickly, and cometo the placewhere thou didst hidethyself whenthe businesswas in hand, and shalt remainbythe stoneEzel.
And I will shootthreearrowson the sidethereof, as though I shotat a mark.
And, behold, I will senda lad, saying, Go,find outthe arrows. If I expresslysayunto the lad,Behold, the arrowsare on this side of thee, takethem; then comethou: for there is peaceto thee, and no hurt;as the LORDliveth.
But if I saythus unto the young man,Behold, the arrowsare beyondthee; go thy way:for the LORDhath sent thee away.
And as touching the matterwhich thou and I have spokenof, behold, the LORDbe between thee and me forever.
So Davidhidhimself in the field:and when the new moonwas come, the kingsat him downto eatmeat.
And the kingsatupon his seat,as at other times, even upon a seatby the wall:and Jonathanarose, and Abnersatby Saul'sside, and David'splacewas empty.
Nevertheless Saulspakenot any thingthat day:for he thought,Something hath befallenhim, he is notclean;surely he is not clean.
And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the secondday of the month, that David'splacewas empty:and Saulsaidunto Jonathanhis son,Wherefore comethnot the sonof Jesseto meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?
And JonathanansweredSaul,Davidearnestlyaskedleave of meto go to Bethlehem:
And he said,Let me go,I pray thee; for our familyhath a sacrificein the city;and my brother,he hath commandedme to be there: and now, if I have foundfavourin thine eyes, let me get away,I pray thee, and seemy brethren. Therefore he comethnot unto the king'stable.
Then Saul'sangerwas kindledagainst Jonathan, and he saidunto him, Thou sonof the perverserebelliouswoman, do not I knowthat thou hast chosenthe sonof Jesseto thine own confusion, and unto the confusionof thy mother'snakedness?
For as long asthe sonof Jesselivethupon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom.Wherefore now sendand fetchhim unto me, for he shall surely die.
And JonathanansweredSaulhis father, and saidunto him, Wherefore shall he be slain?what hath he done?
And Saulcasta javelinat him to smitehim: whereby Jonathanknewthat it was determinedof his fatherto slayDavid.
So Jonathanarosefrom the tablein fierceanger, and did eatno meatthe seconddayof the month:for he was grievedfor David, because his fatherhad done him shame.
And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathanwent outinto the fieldat the time appointedwith David, and a littleladwith him.
And he saidunto his lad,Run,find outnow the arrowswhich I shoot. And as the ladran,he shotan arrowbeyondhim.
And when the ladwas cometo the placeof the arrowwhich Jonathanhad shot,Jonathancriedafterthe lad,and said,Is not the arrowbeyondthee?
And Jonathancriedafterthe lad,Make speed, haste, staynot. And Jonathan'sladgathered upthe arrows, and cameto his master.
But the ladknewnot any thing:only Jonathanand Davidknewthe matter.
And Jonathangavehis artilleryunto his lad,and saidunto him, Go,carrythem to the city.
And as soon as the ladwas gone,Davidaroseout of a place towardthe south, and fellon his faceto the ground, and bowedhimself threetimes:and they kissedoneanother, and weptonewith another, until Davidexceeded.
And Jonathansaidto David,Goin peace, forasmuch as we have swornbothof us in the nameof the LORD,saying,The LORDbe between me and thee, and between my seedand thy seedforever. And he aroseand departed:and Jonathanwentinto the city.
