And it came to pass after manydays, that the wordof the LORDcame to Elijahin the thirdyear, saying,Go,shewthyself unto Ahab;and I will sendrainuponthe earth.
And Elijahwentto shewhimself unto Ahab. And there was a sorefaminein Samaria.
And AhabcalledObadiah, which was the governor of his house.(Now Obadiahfearedthe LORDgreatly:
For it was so, when Jezebelcut offthe prophetsof the LORD,that Obadiahtookan hundredprophets, and hidthem by fiftyin a cave, and fedthem with breadand water.)
And Ahabsaidunto Obadiah,Gointo the land, unto all fountainsof water, and unto all brooks:peradventurewe may findgrassto savethe horsesand mulesalive, that we losenot all the beasts.
So they dividedthe landbetween them to pass throughoutit: Ahabwentonewayby himself, and Obadiahwentanotherwayby himself.
And as Obadiahwas in the way, behold, Elijahmethim: and he knewhim, and fellon his face, and said,Art thou that my lordElijah?
And he answeredhim, I am: go,tellthy lord,Behold, Elijahis here.
And he said,What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliverthy servantinto the handof Ahab,to slayme?
As the LORDthy Godliveth, there is nonationor kingdom, whithermy lordhath not sentto seekthee: and when they said,He is not there; he took an oathof the kingdomand nation, that they foundthee not.
And now thou sayest,Go,tellthy lord,Behold, Elijahis here.
And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gonefrom thee, that the Spiritof the LORDshall carrythee whither I knownot; and so when I comeand tellAhab, and he cannot findthee, he shall slayme: but I thy servantfearthe LORDfrom my youth.
Was it not toldmy lordwhat I didwhen Jezebelslewthe prophetsof the LORD,how I hidan hundredmenof the LORD'Sprophetsby fiftyin a cave, and fedthem with breadand water?
And now thou sayest,Go,tellthy lord,Behold, Elijahis here: and he shall slayme.
And Elijahsaid,As the LORDof hostsliveth, beforewhom I stand,I will surely shewmyself unto him to day.
So Obadiahwentto meetAhab, and toldhim: and Ahabwentto meetElijah.
And it came to pass, when AhabsawElijah, that Ahabsaidunto him, Art thou he that troublethIsrael?
And he answered,I have not troubledIsrael;but thou, and thy father'shouse,in that ye have forsakenthe commandmentsof the LORD,and thou hast followedBaalim.
Now therefore send, and gatherto me all Israelunto mountCarmel, and the prophetsof Baalfourhundredand fifty, and the prophetsof the grovesfourhundred, which eatat Jezebel'stable.
So Ahabsentunto all the childrenof Israel, and gathered➔ the prophetstogetherunto mountCarmel.
And Elijahcameunto all the people, and said,How longhaltye between twoopinions?if the LORDbe God,follow him: but if Baal, then followhim. And the peopleansweredhim not a word.
Then saidElijahunto the people,I, even I only, remaina prophetof the LORD;but Baal'sprophetsare fourhundredand fiftymen.
Let them therefore giveus twobullocks;and let them chooseonebullockfor themselves, and cut it in pieces, and layit on wood, and putno fireunder: and I will dressthe otherbullock, and layit on wood, and putno fireunder:
And callye on the nameof your gods, and I will callon the nameof the LORD:and the Godthat answerethby fire, let him be God.And all the peopleansweredand said,It is wellspoken.
And Elijahsaidunto the prophetsof Baal,Chooseyou onebullockfor yourselves, and dressit first;for ye are many;and callon the nameof your gods, but putno fireunder.
And they tookthe bullockwhich was giventhem, and they dressedit, and calledon the nameof Baalfrom morningeven until noon, saying,O Baal, hearus. But there was novoice, nor any that answered. And they leapedupon the altarwhich was made.
And it came to pass at noon, that Elijahmockedthem, and said,Cryaloud:for he is a god;either he is talking,or he is pursuing,or he is in a journey,or peradventurehe sleepeth, and must be awaked.
And they criedaloud, and cutthemselves after their mannerwith knivesand lancets, till the bloodgushed outupon them.
And it came to pass, when middaywas past, and they prophesieduntil the time of the offeringof the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
And Elijahsaidunto all the people,Come nearunto me. And all the peoplecame nearunto him. And he repairedthe altarof the LORDthat was broken down.
And Elijahtooktwelvestones, according to the numberof the tribesof the sonsof Jacob, unto whom the wordof the LORDcame, saying,Israelshall be thy name:
And with the stoneshe builtan altarin the nameof the LORD:and he madea trenchaboutthe altar,as great as would containtwo measuresof seed.
And he put➔ the woodin order, and cutthe bullockin pieces, and laidhim on the wood, and said,Fillfourbarrelswith water, and pourit on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
And he said,Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said,Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.
And the waterranround aboutthe altar;and he filledthe trenchalso with water.
And it came to pass at the time of the offeringof the evening sacrifice, that Elijahthe prophetcame near, and said,LORDGodof Abraham,Isaac, and of Israel, let it be knownthis daythat thou art Godin Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have doneall these things at thy word.
Hearme, O LORD,hearme, that this peoplemay knowthat thou art the LORDGod,and that thou hast turned➔ their heartbackagain.
Then the fireof the LORDfell, and consumedthe burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked upthe waterthat was in the trench.
And when all the peoplesawit, they fellon their faces:and they said,The LORD,he is the God;the LORD,he is the God.
And Elijahsaidunto them, Takethe prophetsof Baal;let not oneof them escape. And they tookthem: and Elijahbrought them downto the brookKishon, and slewthem there.
And Elijahsaidunto Ahab,Get thee up,eatand drink;for there is a soundof abundanceof rain.
So Ahabwent upto eatand to drink. And Elijahwent upto the topof Carmel;and he cast himself downupon the earth, and puthis facebetween his knees,
And saidto his servant,Go upnow, looktowardthe sea.And he went up,and looked,and said,There is nothing.And he said,Go againseventimes.
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said,Behold, there arisetha littlecloudout of the sea, like a man'shand. And he said,Go up,sayunto Ahab,Preparethy chariot, and get thee down, that the rainstopthee not.
And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heavenwas blackwith cloudsand wind, and there was a greatrain. And Ahabrode, and wentto Jezreel.
And the handof the LORDwas on Elijah;and he girded uphis loins, and ranbeforeAhabto the entranceof Jezreel.
