' Senex' meant the senior Bishop of an African province, who was ipso facto Primate (as Secundus was of Numidia), except, of course, in Proconsularis, where Carthage had primacy. It appears that Silvanus was now senior Bishop of Numidia, unless senex is only an honorific title in the subdeacon's mouth ---- 'our venerable Silvanus.'
