The Lord has swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and has not pitied: he has thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he has brought them down to the ground: he has polluted the kingdom and the its princes.
He has cut offinhisfierceangerall the hornof Israel:he has drawnbackhis right handfrom beforethe enemy,and he burnedagainst Jacoblike a flamingfire,whichdevoursround about.
He has benthis bowlike an enemy:he stoodwith his right handas an adversary,and slewallthat werepleasantto the eyein the tabernacleof the daughterof Zion:he poured outhis furylike fire.
The Lordwas as an enemy:he has swallowed upIsrael,he has swallowed upall her palaces:he has destroyedhis strong holds,and has increasedin the daughterof Judahmourningand lamentation.
And he has violently taken awayhis tabernacle,asif it were ofa garden:he has destroyedhis places of the assembly:the LORDhas caused the solemn feastsand Sabbathsto be forgottenin Zion,and has despisedin the indignationof his angerthe kingand the priest.
The Lordhas cast offhis altar,he has abhorredhis sanctuary,he has given upinto the handof the enemythe wallsof her palaces;they have madea noisein the houseof the LORD,as in the dayof a solemn feast.
The LORDhas purposedto destroythe wallof the daughterof Zion:he has stretched outa line,he has not withdrawnhis handfrom destroying:therefore he made the rampartand the wallto lament;they languishedtogether.
Her gates are sunk into the ground; he has destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD.
The eldersof the daughterof Zionsitupon the ground,andkeep silence:they have cast updustupon their heads;they have girdedthemselves with sackcloth:the virginsof Jerusalemhang downtheir headsto the ground.
My eyesdo failwith tears,my bowelsare troubled,my liveris pouredupon the earth,for the destructionof the daughterof my people;because the childrenand the sucklingsswoonin the streetsof the city.
They say to their mothers, Where is grain and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers’ bosom.
What thing shall I take to witnessfor you? what thingshall I likento you, O daughterof Jerusalem?what shall I equalto you, that I may comfortyou, O virgindaughterof Zion?for your breachisgreatlike the sea:who can healyou?
Your prophetshave seenvainand foolish thingsfor you: and they have not discoveredyour iniquity,to turn awayyour captivity;but have seenfor you falseburdensand causes of banishment.
All that passby claptheirhandsat you;they hissand wagtheir headat the daughterof Jerusalem,saying, Isthis the citythatmencallThe perfectionof beauty,The joyof the whole earth?
All your enemieshave openedtheir mouthagainst you: they hissand gnashthe teeth:they say,We have swallowedherup:certainlythisisthe daythat we looked for;we have found,we have seenit.
The LORD has done that which he had devised; he has fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he has thrown down, and has not pitied: and he has caused your enemy to rejoice over you, he has set up the horn of your adversaries.
Their heartcriedto the Lord,O wallof the daughterof Zion,let tearsrun downlike a riverdayand night:giveyourself no rest;let not the appleof your eyecease.
Arise,cry outin the night:in the beginningof the watchespour outyour heartlike waterbeforethe faceof the Lord:lift upyour handstoward him for the lifeof your young children,that faintfor hungerin the topof every street.
Look,O LORD,and considerto whom you have donethis.Shall the womeneattheir fruit,andchildrenof a span long?shall the priestand the prophetbe slainin the sanctuaryof the Lord?
The youngand the oldlieon the groundin the streets:my virginsand my young menare fallenby the sword;you have slainthemin the dayof your anger;you have killed,andnot pitied.
You have called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD’s anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up has my enemy consumed.
